"Whatever you ask of Guru Ram Das on his birthday, he must deliver."—Yogi Bhajan

Guru Ram Das, the Lord of Miracles and Spiritual Teacher of Yogi Bhajan

Each fall we have the blessing of celebrating Guru Ram Das’ birthday. Known as the Lord of Miracles, Guru Ram Das embodied humility, service, and deep devotion. Guru Ram Das held a special place in Yogi Bhajan's heart. Kundalini Yogis look to Guru Ram Das for guidance, healing, and protection. And, Yogi Bhajan gave us a special practice to do in celebration of Guru Ram Das' birthday each year.

Early Morning Sadhana
Friday - October 9
4:30 am to 7:30 am

(doors open at 4 am, close at 4:30 am)
"When a person gets up in the morning and does the sadhana, do you know what accompanies that person? All the angels, all saints and sages come to listen. Their souls fly to those places to listen where God is chanted." –Yogi Bhajan

When Shakta opened the doors to KYL in October of 2003, the first class she taught was on Guru Ram Das’ birthday! Guru Ram Das was the 4th of the Sikh Gurus and Yogi Bhajan’s teacher on the astral plane. Was that merely circumstantial, or, was it serendipity? We think it was destiny!

Shakta chanted Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru** by herself for 2.5 hours that morning. Every year since then, we chant 2.5 hours of Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru together at KYL on Guru Ram Das’ birthday.

When you join with others to praise the realm of Guru Ram Das on his birthday anything stuck in your life can be moved from the impossible to the possible. And, who couldn’t use a little of that nowadays?!

Schedule, Friday, October 9
4:00 am - Doors to Fine Arts Building (FAB) Open
4:30 am - Japji (meditative prayer).
4:30 am - Doors to FAB Close
4:45 am - Tune In with ‘Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo.’
4:50 am - Warm-ups.
5:00 am - Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru*** (chanting for 2.5 hours).
7:30 am - Hukam**** followed by the Long Time Sunshine Song.

* A shabd is an extended mantra. ‘Sha’ means ‘to cut.’ ‘-bd’ means ‘the ego.’ A shabd is a mantra that dissolves the ego which obstructs the truth and prevents us from perceiving and acting from our authentic Self.

** If 31-minutes of meditation is impossible on some of the days prior to Guru Ram Das’ birthday simply chant Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru for 3, 7, 11 or 22 minutes. Even having the sound current of Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru playing continuously on repeat will have an effect on you and your environment.

*** Effect of the mantra Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru: When life seems stuck, praise the domain of Guru Ram Das, the realm of the heart and of the Neutral Mind where all things become pure. This mantra reaches the realm of miracles. Ask for a miracle and then watch the impossible become possible!

****Hukam-the divine order of the day.
KYL's Theme for October

Kundalini Yoga & Meditation for

The Subtle Bodies

The yogic model of the human being is a vast one. Yogis have unshakable faith in the human being’s almost unlimited capacity for health, healing, energy and vitality. They believe in the capacity of human intuition to give guidance to life. Their goal is the experience and expression of the higher self—the higher physical, mental and spiritual self.

Human beings can reconstitute, renew and refresh ourselves with each breath. We are a swirling mix of chakras, tattvas, gunas, nadis and the ten bodies.

Come to KYL in Oct. to:
--learn more about your subtle bodies
--recognize when one or more are out of balance
--bring yourself into alignment whenever you need it!

Gong & Mantra ...

Guru Ram Das' Birthday

Triple Gong & Mantra

Friday - October 9 - 6:30 pm to 8 pm

with Shakta Kaur, Hari Dev Singh and Tej Karam Singh
Come join us for our monthly session of the ‘Healing Power of Gong & Mantra.’ We begin every ‘Healing Power of Gong & Mantra’ with light Kundalini Yoga to prepare the body for what’s to come (the yoga is appropriate for all levels). Then we move into deep relaxation with not one, not two, but three, beautiful Paiste gongs! Your mind will have no defense to the gong after 90 seconds!

After the gong we use sound (mantra) to remind us that the entire universe was built on sound, on vibration. And, as we vibrate a particular combination of sounds, we tune into a different level of intelligence, consciousness and spirit.

On October 9th we tune into the qualities of service, compassion and healing exemplified in the life of the 16th century saint Guru Ram Das. Yogi Bhajan recognized Guru Ram Das as his personal teacher on the astral plane. Guru Ram Das is known as the ‘lord of miracles.’ So, if there is a healing miracle you need in your life the place to be on Friday, October 9th is the ‘Healing Power of Triple Gong & Mantra’ at KYL!

Seating is limited. Pre-registration is recommended. Click Here to pre-register.

Celebrate Shakta’s Birthday

Sunday, October 11

10:30 am to 12 Noon

with delicious veggie potluck after!
Note: Chicago Marathon
is also this Sunday!

There will be street closings downtown.  Public transit is a good option (exit at Library/State/Van Buren).
Shakta’s teaching this Sunday! Yes, we know that she usually teaches every Sunday, however, this Sunday happens to be her birthday, too!

If you haven’t been to class with Shakta in a while why not come on Sunday? You’ll experience her smile, her energy and her love for the teachings. You’ll have a good time guessing her age, too (which she’s not shy about sharing!). It will simply be a fun (perhaps challenging...!) class all around!

Throw Out the Ghosts!

Two Halloween Weekend Classes with Shakta
Friday, Oct. 30, 6:30 – 8:30 pm
Saturday, Oct. 31, 3:00 – 5:00 pm

$25 for one ‘ghostly’ class in advance / $30 at door
Save! $45 per couple, in advance!
We all have ghosts.
What kind of ghosts do you have?
Are you willing to ‘throw out the ghosts’ that haunt your attic?!

This coming Halloween do something for your ‘ghoulish’ subconscious. Let Shakta take you ‘up there’ into your own attic. This is the place where nobody wants to go and where everything that you haven’t been able to unload just yet is still stored!

Yogi Bhajan called it ‘the idiot’s attic’ that exists in every human.’ What is this ‘idiot’s attic?’ It is your subconscious--the realm of dreams and memories, the seat of fears, negative habits, emotional impulses and commotional behaviors. The subconscious can only be kept clean through meditation.

Come to KYL on Halloween weekend to ‘throw out the ghosts’ in two special classes with Shakta. You’ll experience Yogi Bhajan teaching (via DVD) in those classes, too. And you’ll feel such lightness, clarity and delight afterwards that you’ll wonder why you never got around to cleaning out your ‘attic’ sooner!

Seating is limited. Advance registration suggested. Click Here to pre-register.

Moon Watch
CURRENT MOON

Full Moon - September 27

New Moon - October 12

11 Days After - October 23

(Above Dates Adjusted for Central Time Zone)
New Moon
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."

Waxing Moon
... is the time between the New Moon and the day before the Full Moon. During this time the energy of the body moves into your higher centers (chakras). This is the time to bring new things, new people or new relationships into your life or to accelerate the progress of your special projects.

11 Days After New Moon
Yogi Bhajan taught that this is the day when you are in balance. The glandular system readjusts itself on this day. Your metabolism is changing, so if you eat very lightly (green foods) or if you live just on water and lemon today, your health will be perfect. Eat very lightly during the day. Eat only one meal and drink lemon and water the rest of the day.

Full Moon
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum, so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it, you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous causing side effect.)

Waning Moon
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought of as the best time to start a new project.
