Bhangra Dancing

This Saturday (Oct 4)
4:15 pm to 5:15 pm ($10)

with Joan Engebretson
Bhangra is a traditional north Indian folk dance. Originally danced by farmers (men!) after days of harvesting. Since the 1880’s Bhangra has been a dance of the community. And, it continues to be an important part of north Indian (Punjab) lifestyle. Bhangra competitions both in India and the USA have become quite popular.

Joan Engebretson has been sharing Bhangra at KYL for almost ten years now. She loves the energetic workout that Bhangra provides... and thinks you will, too! Joan has created playlists of her Bhangra music on both Spotify and YouTube.

Click this link to hear her list on Spotify: Joan's Bhangra/Bollywood Mix     Spotify is a free music listening site.

If you’d prefer not to sign up for Spotify, you may hear Joan’s class playlist on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrPwRExMpw8qHcBRoF03eBGBexpBJRt9u

And, be sure to come join us for an hour of Bhangra at KYL this Saturday, Oct. 4. We begin Bhangra 4:15pm!
10 Years Since Passing...

Yogi Bhajan Remembrance Day

Monday - October 6

a special class with shata

6 to 7 pm at KYL
‘Let no one weep for me after I am gone. That would not please me at all. When a friend receives a robe of honor, then his friends are pleased with his honor.’ -- Guru Arjan Dev, Siri Guru Granth Sahib, page 923.
On October 6th we remember the passing of Yogi Bhajan, the Master of Kundalini Yoga and the Mahan Tantric. This year marks the tenth anniversary of Yogi Bhajan’s passing.

Shakta Kaur remembers that day ten years ago very well. She was teaching class at a book store in Chicago on the evening that Yogi Bhajan transitioned. She arrived home later that night to receive a phone call from a friend in Canada who relayed the news.

Before leaving the physical plane, Yogi Bhajan requested that on the tenth anniversary of his death that we chant Guru Guru Wahe Guru, Guru Ram Das Guru. This is a global meditation for kindness and compassion. And, this is a vibration that is so very much needed at this time.

If you never had the opportunity to be in the physical presence of Yogi Bhajan know that you experience the touch of him as the Master of Kundalini Yoga through the teachings—the kriyas and meditations which he so selflessly left. When you practice this technology you begin to exhibit the qualities Yogi Bhajan exemplified and taught us to make our own--dignity, divinity, grace, commitment, courage, kindness, compassion, wisdom and understanding.

That is the lineage of which you are a part. So, on Monday, October 6th, come to KYL for class with Shakta from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on the day that we remember Yogi Bhajan. This is your inheritance--direct from the soul, direct from Infinity, delivered through the Golden Chain, to you.

Special Early Morning Sadhana...
KYL’s 11th Anniversary Sadhana and

Guru Ram Das’ Birthday

Thursday, Oct. 9
4:00 am to 7:30 am

"Whatever you ask of Guru Ram Das on his birthday, he must deliver." — Yogi Bhajan

When Shakta opened the doors to KYL in October of 2003, the first class she taught was on Guru Ram Das’ birthday. Guru Ram Das was the 4th of the Sikh Gurus and Yogi Bhajan’s teacher on the astral plane. Was that merely circumstantial, or, was it serendipity? We think it was destiny!

Shakta chanted Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru* by herself for 2.5 hours that morning. Every year since then, we chant 2.5 hours of Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru together at KYL on Guru Ram Das’ birthday.

Be sure to make a special effort to join us on Thursday morning, October 9, because Guru Ram Das is known as the Lord of Miracles. When you join with others to praise the realm of Guru Ram Das on his birthday anything stuck in your life can be moved from the impossible to the possible. And, who couldn’t use a little of that nowadays?!

Schedule, Thursday, October 9
4:00 am - Doors to Fine Arts Building (FAB) Open
4:30 am - Japji (meditative prayer). Doors to the FAB close!
4:50 am - Tune In with ‘Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo.’
4:55 am - Warm-up Exercise.
5:00 am - Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru* (chanting for 2.5 hours).
7:30 am - Hukam*** followed by the Long Time Sunshine Song.

* Effect of the mantra Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru: When life seems stuck, praise the domain of Guru Ram Das, the realm of the heart and of the Neutral Mind where all things become pure. This mantra reaches the realm of miracles. Ask for a miracle and then watch the impossible become possible!
** Doors to the Fine Arts Building (FAB) close at 4:30 am.
*** Hukam-the divine order of the day.
An 11 Day Tradition...

Guru Ram Das Birthday Chanting

September 28 through October 8

“I was told in my childhood that if you recite the mantra Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru eleven times a day, a miracle will happen to protect you. Many times in my life I had those miracles happening to me. It can create miraculous situations and environments around you to take you out of any problem on the planet.”
-- Yogi Bhajan
If you’re looking for a beautiful daily practice of chanting why not try eleven days of the shabd* ‘Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru?’ This is an extended mantra widely known for its blessings of protection and healing in times of deep trouble.

Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru means ‘honored and praised is Guru Ram Das.’ This sound current brings you directly into the realm of the heart. It helps you access the neutral, meditative mind. Watch as all issues, commotions and worries suddenly clear. You will feel content, pure and safe.

Come to KYL for class any time between Sept. 28 through Oct. 8 to experience a wide variety of musical versions of this this beautiful mantra with other like-minded souls!

* Shabd–‘Sha-‘ means ‘to cut’ and ‘-bd’ means the ‘ego.’ So, a shabd is a sound current which cuts through the ego.
Ghostly Gong Night...

Triple Gong and Mantra Night

Throw Out the Ghosts!

Friday - October 31
6:30 to 8 pm

with Shakta Kaur, Hari Dev and Tej Karam Singh

We all have ghosts.
What kind of ghosts do you have?
Are you willing to be the ghost to ‘throw out the ghosts?’

Human beings are plagued by many ghosts. But, really, they are perpetual fears. Being unsuccessful, being poor, being sick, being alone, being divorced, being married even being in love (!) are all ‘human’ ghosts.

To celebrate Halloween our popular session of the ‘Healing Power of Gong and Mantra’ is designed to clear out the attic of your mind to ‘throw out the ghosts!’ And, once again we’ll feature not one, not two, but three beautiful Paiste gongs! KYL Teacher Tej Karam Singh brings his gong to join Shakta Kaur and Hari Dev for this very special evening of ghostly gonging!

We begin every ‘gong and mantra’ session with light Kundalini Yoga to prepare the body for what’s to come (the yoga is appropriate for all levels). Then we move into deep relaxation with all three Paiste symphonic gongs. Your mind will have no defense to the gong after 90 seconds!

After the gong we use sound (mantra) to remind us that the entire universe was built on sound, on vibration. And, as we vibrate a particular combination of sounds, we are able to tune into a different level of intelligence, or, consciousness.

Click Here to pre-register for the deep vibrational healing of October’s ‘throw out the ghosts’ triple gong and mantra on Friday, October 31st.

Our Fall Theme...

KYL’s October Theme

Yoga & Meditation for Determination
Determination is a quality that we all admire. Having great determination is also known as having great will-power, resolve, purpose, fortitude, grit, strength of mind and strength of character.

When we are determined we push ourselves beyond the limitations. Being ‘determined’ becomes a priority. We are determined from the first moment to the final act.

Determination requires commitment. We recognize we have a specific purpose in the play of life. Honoring that purpose provides a self-determination to overcome any impossibility along the way.

A lack of determination may arise from a lack of self-esteem or from insecurity. Living with indecisiveness or denying ourselves the opportunity to fully express ourselves also manifests as a lack of determimation.

Build bridges--not barriers--to achieving your excellence.  Come to KYL this fall to:
--get rid of any inner deficiency
--make the impossible possible
--uncover the strength of who you are and manifest it
--live a life of self-determination, self-achievement and self-excellence!

Level 2 "Conscious Communication" - Puerto Rico

With Mahan Rishi Singh, D.C., Nirbhe Kaur and Shakta Kaur

March 12-18, 2015
includes a lovly "free day" to enjoy the island
Communication is a gift to know. Communication is a gift to understand. Communication is a gift to realize. If you do not use communication for these three things, it is better that you shut up and don’t talk.’ -- Yogi Bhajan

Join us for this unique seven-day course (one of five Level 2 modules) to learn how to speak — meditatively and intuitively — not just to talk! The discipline of conscious communication qualifies you to speak each word one-pointedly, faithfully, courageously, directly and simply.

In this course you will learn to:

  • Gather your energy and awareness to support what you intend to communicate.
  • Practice harmonious communication in areas of conflict or confrontation.
  • Consciously communicate at the subtle frequencies of your chakras.
  • Realize prayer as the intimate presence of the Infinite within you.

This is our second Level 2 course at the beautiful Copamarina Resort. You will love the ‘Copa.’ Their staff is truly accommodating. Our classroom is on the waterfront. Our vegetarian meals are lovingly prepared. Our group dinners under the trellis are nothing short of magical. Many can only take an hour or so for lunch. ‘There are plenty of kriyas and meditations that fit nicely into a 45-minute time slot,’ Shakta says!

Moon Watch

New Moon - September 24

11 Days After - October 5

Full Moon - October 8

(Above Dates Adjusted for Central Time Zone)
New Moon
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."

Waxing Moon
... is the time between the New Moon and the day before the Full Moon. During this time the energy of the body moves into your higher centers (chakras). This is the time to bring new things, new people or new relationships into your life or to accelerate the progress of your special projects.

11 Days After New Moon
Yogi Bhajan taught that this is the day when you are in balance. The glandular system readjusts itself on this day. Your metabolism is changing, so if you eat very lightly (green foods) or if you live just on water and lemon today, your health will be perfect. Eat very lightly during the day. Eat only one meal and drink lemon and water the rest of the day.

Full Moon
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum, so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it, you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous causing side effect.)

Waning Moon
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought of as the best time to start a new project.

A Thought From Yogi Bhajan
Everybody has God’s light and it must be lit by a person’s own discipline. And the glass to keep it lit and shining should be kept by the person’s own courage, strength and grit. I believe it. I believe this is the love. I believe everybody has the chance to love one’s soul and every soul has the right to shine and every shine has to bring light and brightness, beauty and bountifulness to all, generation after generation.
