In anticipation of the autumnal equinox our popular monthly session of the ‘Healing Power of Gong and Mantra’ again features not one, not two, but three beautiful Paiste gongs!  KYL Teacher Tej Karam Singh brings his gong to join Shakta Kaur and Hari Dev for this very special evening.

As always, we begin every ‘gong and mantra’ session with light Kundalini Yoga to prepare the body for what’s to come (the yoga is appropriate for all levels). Then we move into deep relaxation with all three Paiste symphonic gongs. Your mind will have no defense to the gong after 90 seconds!

After the gong we use sound (mantra) to remind us that the entire universe was built on sound, on vibration. And, as we vibrate a particular combination of sounds, we are able to tune into a different level of intelligence, or, consciousness.

How Kundalini Yoga Saved my Life

“It’s August 26, 2014 at 4:15am and I’m taking the old-fashioned elevator up to the 5th floor where my former yoga home is located. As the gate of the elevator closes and the man sitting inside presses a button, I feel like I’m in a time machine that’s taking me back to 2006. Eight long years have passed since I stepped foot in this magical place, Kundalini Yoga in the Loop, situated between artist shops in the Fine Arts Building on South Michigan Avenue! My last memories of practicing Kundalini Yoga in Chicago all happened inside this quaint little studio, where I used to come religiously every Sunday morning like some people go to Church.

I would take the L from Evanston, IL, where I was a graduate student at Northwestern University’s Communication Disorders program. Every other day of the week, I was miserable; fighting inner and outer demons, battling a depression that I was sure would take my life. Shakta Kaur’s Sunday morning classes were my respite, my home away from home during those lonely and gloomy days. On the outside, it appeared that I had everything going for me: I got into the top 3 graduate program for speech language pathology in the country; I was living just a 5 minute walk from Lake Michigan and a scenic bike ride away from the academic building where I spent the majority of my days; I managed to make a few good friends and found a spiritual community after relocating here from New Jersey.

Despite all this, by my third quarter in the program, everything looked bleak and the thought of completing what I started filled me with dread. I somehow managed to keep my academic GPA up, but when it came to performing up to standards in my sessions with clients, I was a train wreck. I was encouraged to go for therapy, so I started seeing a psychiatrist and a psychologist who tried their best to help me... to no avail. The cocktail of antidepressants I was on only made me more suicidal, and talking about how I was feeling only made me feel more like a victim with no escape. Only disciplined meditation and yoga practice created any noticeable changes in me. I would come to class with the usual negative train of thought that followed me around like a rain cloud, and come out of class feeling like the sun had risen on my horizon.

During the intense practice of pranayama, kriya and meditation, I noticed subtle shifts in my energy and physiology. Since I was taking anatomy class at the time, I would visualize the diaphragm moving up and down during inspiration and expiration, and imagine how the vocal cords and all the laryngeal muscles expanded and contracted while reciting Gurbani mantras. Sat Kriya strengthened my sense of self by reconnecting me with the seat of personal power and Kirtan Kriya reminded me that I am Infinite and my soul never dies. This brought a much-needed perspective on the ego’s desire to escape from my mental and emotional anguish. As I lay in corpse pose during deep relaxation while listening to the sound of the Gong being played, I quickly shifted out of the default analysis paralysis state and into a more relaxed and intuitive mode through the activation of my parasympathetic nervous system. The practice of yoga brought my book learning to life and gave it practical significance.

Kundalini yoga is the only practice that has given me the experience of God and connection with Source, not just the intellectual knowledge or philosophy about it. Now I would like to share this powerful technology with others, so that they too have the opportunity to experience personal transformation. Which is why, after practicing this style of yoga for the past 15 years, I finally committed to Level I Aquarian teacher training and recently became a certified Kundalini Yoga teacher! If you are searching for mental sanity as I did, the solution lies not in a quick fix in the form of recreational or over-the-counter drugs, but in a lifestyle change. Join us at KYL for this unique six-day course (one of five Level 2 Modules) to enhance the depth of your understanding of the mind and meditation. It is a unique opportunity for you to assess your meditative skill and refine your approach to meditation. To master your mind, you must master meditation!

In this course you will:

  • Focus and elaborate on the relationship to your own mind
  • Increase your ability to observe neutrally, to clear your mind of distractions
  • Experience and practice the use of intuition as a primary skill
  • Learn the structure of the mind as described in The Mind book
  • Understand how to use the 27 projections of the mind
  • Examine how to apply this to your own mind and in your life
  • Become confident to teach and incorporate these ideas in your classes

Each day we study with the Master, Yogi Bhajan, in a DVD class with meditation. We work both individually and in groups, exploring key concepts and ideas. In addition, we experience kriyas and meditations as well as other processes to increase our ability to heal through meditation and to use our skills to help people.

This is a 60-hour course. Fifty hours are spent in the classroom with 12 hours of home study to be completed 90 days after the course concludes. Gurucharan Singh Khalsa is teaching 3 days of this course.

Believe it or not, Shakta used to teach all of the lunch time classes at KYL 10.75 years ago! At the time she decided on a 45-minute format for those who work in the city. Many can only take an hour or so for lunch. ‘There are plenty of kriyas and meditations that fit nicely into a 45-minute time slot,’ Shakta says!

So, come join Shakta on one of these Tuesdays to ‘relax, restore and rejuvenate’ before you head back to the office!

Just For Fun
Shakta Kaur is working with Fine Arts Building (FAB) artist Beatriz Ledesma on a collaborative art piece for October’s ‘Artists Month.’ Their work will hang in the second floor gallery of the FAB. Originally, Beatriz and Shakta were going to make a mosaic based upon one of Beatriz’ mandalas. However, the piece has now morphed into a mosaic spiral--using lots of the beach glass Shakta picks up on her morning walks to Chicago’s 12th Street Beach!

Full Moon
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum, so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it, you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous causing side effect.)

Waning Moon
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought of as the best time to start a new project.

New Moon
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."

Waxing Moon
... is the time between the New Moon and the day before the Full Moon. During this time the energy of the body moves into your higher centers (chakras). This is the time to bring new things, new people or new relationships into your life or to accelerate the progress of your special projects.

11 Days After New Moon
Yogi Bhajan taught that this is the day when you are in balance. The glandular system readjusts itself on this day. Your metabolism is changing, so if you eat very lightly (green foods) or if you live just on water and lemon today, your health will be perfect. Eat very lightly during the day. Eat only one meal and drink lemon and water the rest of the day.
