Happy Summer Solstice!

The Solstice signals the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere! The Summer Solstice is the day with the most hours of sunlight during the whole year. And, the celebration of the Summer Solstice is a time to reflect upon the growth of the season—both the seeds that were planted in the earth and the seeds planted in our souls. It is a time of cleansing and renewal. It is a time of love and growth as well!

The timing of the Solstice depends on when the Sun reaches its farthest point north of the equator. This year the Summer Solstice falls on Friday, June 21 at 5:04 Universal time. That is 1:04 am Eastern Time and 12:04 am Central Time. But this year, the Summer Solstice happens on Thursday, June 20 for places in North America west of the Central Time Zone. For those in New Mexico Celebrating at the Summer Solstice Sadhana Celebration, their Solstice begins at 11:04 pm Mountain Time and 10:04 pm Pacific Time!

The word ‘solstice’ is from the Latin solstitium, from sol (sun) and stitium (to stop). It describes the fact that the Sun appears to stop at this time (and again at the Winter Solstice).

In temperate regions, we notice that the Sun is higher in the sky throughout the day, and its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer! So, enjoy your longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere—the Summer Solstice!

Two New Teachers Join the KYL Family

This month we are pleased to welcome two new graduates into our roster of talented teachers at KYL!
 

Abhaijot Kaur
Tuesday, 12:15 to 1:00 pm

Abhaijot Kaur (Olivia Jaks) is a clinical massage therapist.  She found out she was pregnant just before the start of Teacher Training.  And, she just gave birth to her beautiful baby girl--Helena Radha Kaur--on April 11th!  Abhaijot Kaur is back at work now with her massage clients.  And, she has already begun teaching the Tuesday lunchtime class at KYL.  Abhaijot’s skill as an instructor is enhanced only by her personal strength and conviction ... and, her love of the teachings.  We think you will love Abhaijot’s classes as much as we do!

Ranbir Kaur
Thursday, 6 to 7 pm

Ranbir Kaur (Ruby Singh) began practicing Kundalini Yoga in Los Angeles, CA, in Feb 2011. She was drawn to the complete and measurable effects that Kundalini Yoga offers to allow ‘householders,’ (i.e., active and productive members of society!) to handle the pressures of time and space. She completed Level 1 Teacher Training at KYL in May 2013. Ranbir is a Business Development Manager working in the Technology Services Industry. She has both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Information Technology from University of Illinois at Chicago. And, she is thrilled to teach her first class at KYL on the day of Summer Solstice!

This is the ‘Anne of Green Gables’ version of Shakta Kaur and Adi Shakti Kaur (Phoenix, AZ, USA)! They donned these ‘Anne’ hats while waiting in the Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Airport for their flights home after last month’s Level 2 ‘Vitality & Stress’ course!

Full Moon
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum, so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it, you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous causing side effect.)

Waning Moon
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought of as the best time to start a new project.

New Moon
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."

Waxing Moon
... is the time between the New Moon and the day before the Full Moon. During this time the energy of the body moves into your higher centers (chakras). This is the time to bring new things, new people or new relationships into your life or to accelerate the progress of your special projects.

11 Days After New Moon
Yogi Bhajan taught that this is the day when you are in balance. The glandular system readjusts itself on this day. Your metabolism is changing, so if you eat very lightly (green foods) or if you live just on water and lemon today, your health will be perfect. Eat very lightly during the day. Eat only one meal and drink lemon and water the rest of the day.
