Guru Ram Das’ Birthday

Tuesday, October 9 - 4:15 to 7:30 am

"Whatever you ask of Guru Ram Das on his birthday, he must deliver."—Yogi Bhajan

When Shakta opened the doors to KYL in October of 2003, the first class she taught was on Guru Ram Das’ birthday.  Was that merely circumstantial, or, was it serendipity? We think it was destiny!

Shakta chanted Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru** by herself for 2.5 hours that morning. Every year since then, we chant 2.5 hours of Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru together at KYL on Guru Ram Das’ birthday. Guru Ram Das was the 4th of the Sikh Gurus and Yogi Bhajan’s teacher on the astral plane.

Be sure to make a special effort to join us on Tuesday morning, October 9, because Guru Ram Das is known as the Lord of Miracles. When you join with others to praise the realm of Guru Ram Das on his birthday anything stuck in your life can be moved from the impossible to the possible. And, who couldn’t use a little of that nowadays?!

Schedule, Tuesday, October 9
  • 3:45 am - Doors to Fine Arts Building (FAB) Open
  • 4:15 am - Japji (meditative prayer).
  • 4:30 am - Doors to FAB Close
  • 4:40 am - Tune In with ‘Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo.’
  • 4:45 am - Warm-ups.
  • 5:00 am - Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru (chanting for 2.5 hours).
  • 7:35 am - Hukam*** followed by the Long Time Sunshine Song.

** Effect of the mantra Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru: When life seems stuck, praise the domain of Guru Ram Das, the realm of the heart and of the Neutral Mind where all things become pure. This mantra reaches the realm of miracles. Ask for a miracle and then watch the impossible become possible!

*** Hukam:  The divine order of the day.
Guru Ram Das Birthday Chanting
Guru Ram Das Birthday Chanting

11 Days

Friday, Sept. 28 through Tuesday, Oct. 9
I was told in my childhood that if you recite the mantra Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru eleven times a day, a miracle will happen to protect you. Many times in my life I had those miracles happening to me. It can create miraculous situations and environments around you to take you out of any problem on the planet.-- Yogi Bhajan

If you’re looking for a beautiful daily practice of chanting why not try eleven days of the shabd* ‘Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru?’ This is an extended mantra widely known for its blessings of protection and healing in times of deep trouble.

Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru means ‘honored and praised is Guru Ram Das.’ This sound current brings you directly into the realm of the heart. It helps you access the neutral, meditative mind. Watch as all issues, commotions and worries suddenly clear. You will feel content, pure and safe.

If you’re unfamiliar with ‘Dhan Dhan Ram Das GuruClick Here for a copy of the mantra sheet. We have several different musical versions of ‘Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru’ available at KYL. Stay after class and pick out a beautiful CD of ‘Dhan Dhan Ram Das Guru’ to support your practice!

*Shabd – ‘Sha-‘ means ‘to cut’ and ‘-bd’ means the ‘ego.’ So, a shabd is a sound current which cuts through the ego. Also, sometimes spelled ‘shabad.’
Yogi Bhajan Remembrance Day

Saturday, October 6
Let no one weep for me after I am gone. That would not please me at all. When a friend receives a robe of honor, then his friends are pleased with his honor.-- Guru Arjan Dev, Siri Guru Granth Sahib, page 923.

It is on this day that we remember the passing of Yogi Bhajan, the Master of Kundalini Yoga and the Mahan Tantric. Shakta Kaur remembers that day very well. She was teaching a Kundalini Yoga and Meditation class at a book store in Chicago on the evening that Yogi Bhajan transitioned from the earth plane. She arrived home later that night to receive a phone message from a friend in Canada who relayed the news.

Before leaving the physical plane, Yogi Bhajan requested that his death be a time of celebrating his going home. So, during the 17 days after his death--a traditional time of memorial for Sikhs--and until his Memorial Service in Espanola, New Mexico, the Kundalini Yoga community came together and chanted, prayed, talked and ate meals together.

If you never had the opportunity to be in the physical presence of Yogi Bhajan know that you experience the touch of him as the Master of Kundalini Yoga through the teachings—the kriyas and meditations which he so selflessly gave. As a result, you begin to exemplify the qualities he exemplified and taught us to make our own--dignity, divinity, grace, commitment, courage, kindness, compassion, wisdom and understanding. These are the qualities of a Sensory Human--qualities that are much needed as we continue to make our way through this time of transition from the Piscean Age to the Aquarian Age.

That is the lineage of which you are a part. And, it is on this day that we remember the man--Yogi Bhajan--who brought this technology to us as an inheritance direct from the soul, direct from Infinity, delivered through the Golden Chain, to you.

Saturday Classes with Shakta
Clear the Ghosts!

Four Saturday Classes with Shakta

Oct. 6, 13, 20 & 27
10:30 am to 12 noon
  • We all have ghosts.
  • What kind of ghosts do you have?
  • Are you willing to ‘throw out the ghosts’ that haunt your attic?!

On four Saturday mornings in October Shakta will take you ‘up there’ into your own attic. This is the place where nobody wants to go and where everything that you haven’t been able to unload yet is still stored!

Yogi Bhajan called it ‘the idiot’s attic’ that exists in every human.’ What is this ‘idiot’s attic?’ It is your subconscious--the realm of dreams and memories, the seat of fears, negative habits, emotional impulses and commotional behaviors. The subconscious can be kept clean through meditation.

So, come to KYL in October and ‘throw out the ghosts’ in four special classes with Shakta. You’ll get to experience Yogi Bhajan teaching (via DVD) in one of those classes. And you’ll feel such lightness, clarity and delight afterwards that you’ll wonder why you never got around to cleaning out your ‘attic’ sooner! Click Here to pre-register.

See It to Believe It!
Shopping with Shakta

Saturday, October 6
on Chicago’s own Devon Avenue

1:30 pm Lunch - 3:00 pm Shopping
Have you always wanted to go to Devon Avenue but felt a little intimidated going on your own? Have you ever gone to Devon Avenue on your own but were overwhelmed with all the choices?

If so, then, plan to join Shakta for an Indian buffet lunch (first) and shopping (second) ... at some of her favorite places on the ten-block stretch of Chicago’s far north side called ‘Devon Avenue.’

Although mainly Indian focused, Devon Avenue is arguably the most multicultural street in the entire city. Businesses there are run by Pakistanis, Iraqis, and Russians ... that cater to Muslims, Jews, Sikhs, Jains and Christians. Even Shakta’s dad (Greek) once had a store on Devon Avenue!

You may join Shakta on Devon Avenue at 1:30 pm OR leave from KYL with her at 1:00 pm. Click Here to RSVP and for more information.
Yoga for Vision...
KYL's October Theme

 Yoga for Vision

To See Your Goal and Keep it in Your Consciousness
Are you feeling a need to ...
-- Access a whole new level of intuition and wisdom?
-- Find new solutions to old problems?
-- Manifest a previously unimagined goal?
-- Tap into your own creativity and source of your vision?

If so, then come to KYL during October for ‘Yoga for Vision--to See Your Goal and Keep it in Your Consciousness.’ Your ‘vision’ is related to your ‘intention’ but it is what comes before intention. It is a grasp of the direction your creativity wishes to take you.

We are often taught that we need to have ‘vision’ first, ‘intention’ second and ‘creativity’ as the third element that infuses ‘intention’ with our Shakti, with our life force. The creative force manifests as the feminine. Vision is the approach of the masculine offering to take creativity into form.*

But, unorganized creativity, inspiration and a little bit of chaos has to come first! We have to become comfortable with holding the space for all possibilities. Then the vision, intention and organization follow naturally and without effort ... so long as our need for control can be relinquished!

Your ‘vision’ may not always make intellectual sense. It may feel more intuitive, but, it will always seem right. The moment you trust your consciousness, your intuition bill become handy, opportunities will come to you and you will be boundless.

How to keep that vision in your consciousness is the next step. Come to KYL during September and October to learn a new set of guiding forces and principles as you re-‘vision’ your future! Click Here to pre-register for classes.
* Special thanks to Lena Stevens for these ideas!

Moon Watch

New Moon - October 15

11 Days After New Moon - October 26

(Above Dates Adjusted for Central Time Zone)
Full Moon
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum, so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it, you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous causing side effect.)

Waning Moon
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought of as the best time to start a new project.

New Moon
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."

A Thought From Yogi Bhajan
Our brain does not believe in ghosts. We don’t. But whenever we start feeling, believing and understanding that a ghost, or a perpetual fear, is real, then we lose fear. There are many human ghosts—being unsuccessful, being poor, being sick, being divorced, being married, being in love. Oh, a terrible ghost is being in love. It’s a hell. You know when you are in love whether it is going to work out or not—it’s “Oh, oh, oh, oh.” Oh, God it is so funny. How people ruin their glands—you can’t believe it.”
