Early Morning Sadhana
Early Morning 40-Day Sadhana
with Shakta Begins
Wednesday, July 18*
Join Shakta on Wednesday morning, July 18th, as she begins her annual 40-day sadhana of two-and-a-half-hours of
Long Ek Ong Kar, ending on Yogi Bhajan’s birthday, Sunday, August 26.
Long Ek Ong Kar is the cornerstone of early morning group practice and is often called simply, Long Chant. It is also referred to as ‘Morning Call.’ It initiates the Kundalini, initiating the relationship between the soul and the Universal Soul while balancing all the chakras.
The meaning of ‘Ek Ong Kar Sat Nam Siri Wahe Guru,’ is: ‘One Creator created this Creation. Truth is His Name. Great beyond description is His infinite wisdom.’
Long Chant – Morning Call
The Adi Shakti Mantra: Ek Ong Kar
Sat Nam Siri Wahe Guru
4:00 am – Japji (meditative prayer)**
Yogi Bhajan said about this mantra,
4:20 am – Warm-Ups
4:30 am – Long Chant, Morning Call, Ek Ong Kar
7:00 am – Hukam*** for the Day
7:20 am – Breakfast Snacks at KYL (bring something to share!)
‘In the time period two-and-a-half hours before the rising of the Sun, when the channels of energy are
most clear, if the Mantra is sung in sweet harmony, you will be one with the Lord. This will open the solar plexus, which in turn will charge the solar centers. The person will get connected with the Cosmic Energy, and thus will be liberated from the cycle of time and karma.’
There is no charge for this special early morning sadhana.****
NOTE: The doors to the Fine Arts Building (FAB) will be locked at 4 am. There is no entry to the FAB after 4 am. So, arrive early!
* July 18 is Hari Dev Singh and Shakta Kaur’s wedding anniversary!
Click here to see photos from their wedding ceremony eight years ago officiated by KRI’s CEO Nirvair Singh Khalsa.
** Japji is a prayer which relates the conscious mind to the soul. ‘Jap-’ is often translated as ‘song of’ and ‘-ji’ as ‘the soul.’ As a result, Japji is called ‘the song of the soul.’
*** A ‘hukam’ is the divine order of the day.
**** Sadhana (pronounced ‘sod nuh’) is, literally, ‘spiritual discipline;’ the early morning daily spiritual practice.
Gong & Mantra Night
Healing Power of Double Gong & Mantra
with Shakta Kaur and Hari Dev Singh
Friday, July 27
6:30 to 8:00 pm
Bring a friend and join us for one of our most popular monthly sessions of gong and mantra! As always, we begin every ‘Healing Power of Gong
& Mantra’ session with light Kundalini Yoga to prepare the body for what’s to come (the yoga is appropriate for all levels). Then we move into deep relaxation with not one, but, two beautiful Paiste symphonic gongs.
Your mind will have no defense to the gong after 90 seconds!
After the gong we use sound (mantra) to remind us that the
entire universe was built on sound, on vibration. And, as we
vibrate a particular combination of sounds, we are able to tune
into a different level of intelligence, or, consciousness.

in advance / $17 at the door).
Recorded Conference Call
Releasing Subconscious Fears
a recorded conferece with Shakta
If you missed the special one hour conference call with Shakta on June 30th it is now available for you to listen to whenever it fits into your schedule!
Shakta shared that fear comes in degrees from mild caution to extreme phobias and paranoia. And, that while a good dose of fear is often necessary for personal safety sometimes at a very early age fear becomes part of our subconscious.
Adults sometimes show this unconscious fear as fear of loss, separation, abandonment or feelings of helplessness. Other times fear might show itself in feelings of not really being sure of ourselves. Fear clouds our judgment and engages not only the mind, but the body, too.
So, listen in on the call and learn how to eliminate and take fear out of your life—once and for all. Included is the practice of a meditation that uses the sound ‘Gobind’ (which means ‘to protect and sustain the self)’ to help release subconscious fears ... now!
Yoga for Humility and IntuitionKYL's Theme for July and August
- Humility is a capacity that allows wisdom to guide your life... to let the ego go and open the heart.
- Humility takes you beyond what you know and opens your intuition ... to see the unseen.
- Humility is the absence of arrogance, conceit or the feeling of superiority over others ... it comes from putting the Infinite above any status.
- Humility is an openness to all that is ... are you humble enough to accept and act on your gifts without inner conflict?
Come to KYL during the months of July and August as you learn to see beyond the surface of your busy life to truly know who the Doer is! Come learn that humility has nothing to do with passivity, meekness, inferiority or giving up. Humility is first-and-foremost about putting your personality, your commotions and your neuroses aside to do what you came here to do ... to become consciously conscious before your own Infinity!

For Chicago's Level 1 Teacher Training
Teacher Training Devi Scholarship
Deadline is September 1
If finances have kept you from taking the Chicago Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training course at KYL, then the Devi Scholarship may be just what you need! Go on-line
for more details, then complete the application form and return it with your financial deposit on or before Sept. 1st to be considered for one of several partial scholarships. Devi Scholarships are funded by friends, supporters and prior graduates of KYL’s Level 1 Teacher Training courses.
Here’s what one recipient had to say about the impact of receiving a Devi Scholarship:
“Shakta, I wanted you and Hari Dev Singh to know that the Devi Scholarship which enabled me to take Teacher Training has SAVED my life... literally. I was broke in more ways than one. I needed much healing in both body and mind. You knew that my financial situation was such that without the scholarship I would not have been able to take the course. What you don’t know is that I believe Kundalini Yoga has healed both my body from Chron's Disease and my brain from its Bi-Polar behavior. It truly has been a medicine of the divine. I constantly see changes in me that I know are a result of the Teacher Training course. I now have a new hope in my life. None of this would have been possible without the Devi Scholarship. I thank you and all the teachers before me who made this possible.”
To apply for a Devi Scholarship you’ll need to complete an
application form that requires answers to six questions (available here). You are asked to write a biography about yourself; to describe a teacher of any kind whom you admire; to describe your current yoga practice; and to write something about your motivation to take Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training at KYL. When you send in your application you include a financial deposit ($500 recommended). This indicates to the universe your commitment to take the course. You will need to offer some evidence of financial need. Finally, a personal interview is conducted to determine which candidates will eventually receive a Devi Scholarship.

Level 1 Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training
"The Aquarian Teacher"
in Chicago, IL, USA
& Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada
Chicago, IL USA
Begins October 26, 2012 - 10 Weekends
over 8 Months
A note from Shakta Kaur: “I will never be the same again,”
is what we often hear from those who have taken Kundalini Yoga
Teacher Training at KYL . My initial motivation was to
deepen my personal yoga and meditation practice. And, in
truth, I had no intention of teaching Kundalini Yoga. I
already had a degree in music education and had taught public
school music for several years. I really thought that my
teaching days were over!
It wasn’t long, however, before I found myself informally sharing
the techniques I’d learned during Teacher Training not only with
my friends and family, but with the loan officer at our bank and
other business contacts. I laughed out loud when I
realized that I was, in fact, ‘teaching!’
Whatever draws you to this amazing course in Kundalini Yoga as
taught by Yogi Bhajan, know that the end result will be perfect
for you even while it might also be totally different than what
you initially expected. Along the way your mental,
physical and emotional growth will be enhanced in a supportive
and cozy environment. You will learn the tools to not only
deepen your own personal practice, but, you will also gain the
knowledge and self-confidence to elevate yourself and others
into a more peaceful and powerful space.

Full Moon - July 3
New Moon - July 18
(Above Dates Adjusted for Central Time Zone)
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest
energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum,
so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your
energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this
day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink
cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought
to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down
so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it,
you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper,
a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous
causing side effect.)
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New
Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations
from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought
of as the best time to start a new project.
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is
a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the
next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
not on Tuesday
not on Friday
(After Sunday's class join us for a vegetarian potluck.)
A Thought From Yogi Bhajan
Humility is not needed to show that you are weak. Your weakness is just that you have to receive the strength. Humility is to let the ego go and open the heart. Then you can receive the strength of God. It is humility which lets you open yourself to receive the ever living truth.
