As National Yoga Month comes to an end on Friday, September 30, KYL joins hundreds of yoga studios all over the world in an international ‘Time for Yoga’ class.

We’ll begin with ‘light’ Kundalini Yoga (suitable for any body shape/type).  Then we’ll time our deep relaxation (with two beautiful Paiste gongs!) and meditation to synchronize with fellow yogis all over the world.  Our meditation that evening will focus on universal peace.







100% of the proceeds from KYL’s Sept. 30 ‘Time for Yoga’ class are being donated to Chicago’s Dreams For Kids ‘Holiday for Hope.’  So, bring a friend and do some good for yourself and the children of Chicago!

Gurucharan combines western scientific training with Eastern traditions to develop practical approaches to personal growth and fulfillment. Besides his expertise in Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan® Gurucharan earned both an M.Ed. and a Ph.D. in psychology with an emphasis on research in meditation and clinical counseling. He has a keen understanding of Humanology, the psychology of personal excellence developed by Yogi Bhajan, and has used it in clinical practice for three decades.

He is the co-author of Breathwalk® and The Mind with Yogi Bhajan. He co-edited The Psychospiritual Clinician’s Handbook. Gurucharan is committed to sharing the essence of the teachings of Yogi Bhajan to create a lifetime of fulfillment for you in spirit, vitality and destiny. KYL is pleased to once again offer our popular pre-natal yoga class, ‘The Power of the Mother,’ on Mondays from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.

The practice of yoga and meditation during pregnancy helps the body function more optimally and also influences the mental and emotional states of the mother-to-be. Learn how to create harmony within your changing self and your environments in the company of other pregnant women. Come share, meditate and enjoy your unfolding both as a woman and as a giver of life. Expand your power to conceive and create through pre-natal Kundalini Yoga at KYL.

You will learn:
-basic pregnancy yoga postures,
-body care and nutrition tips,
-yogic teachings regarding the connection between the mother and the soul to be incarnated, and
-meditations particularly suited for the time both during and after pregnancy.

New mom and recent KYL graduate, Sarab Nidhan Kaur Gillespie, is your instructor for this course. Sarab Nidhan practiced Kundalini Yoga and Meditation throughout her recent pregnancy and found it greatly reduced her stress level allowing her to relax . And, on June 10th, her healthy and handsome baby boy, Benjamin, was born!

Our 11.11.11 evening celebration of ‘the change of the age’ is the prelude to the debut of the new deep meditation series called ‘The Stages of Meditation: An Expedition towards Realization.’ Gurucharan Singh learned these 21 stages directly from his teacher, Yogi Bhajan, and developed the workshops for this special 3-part meditation series.

This ‘expedition towards realization’ consists of three journeys. Each journey lasts one weekend. Each weekend takes you through seven stages of deep meditation. Each stage systematically confronts your mind’s patterns and limitations, awakens a part of you and develops new skills to clear your way towards realization.

** The Piscean Age and the Aquarian Age are both measurable periods of time. Each is an astrological age, i.e., a time period that parallels major changes in the development of the human race. Each astrological age roughly corresponds to the time it takes for the vernal equinox to 'precess' through one of the twelve constellations of the zodiac; this takes about 2,160 years.

Be among the first to begin a journey called ‘The Stages of Meditation’ – the meditative path to realization. We begin on November 11, 2011, in Chicago, Illinois, USA with KRI’s Director of Training, Gurucharan Singh Khalsa, Ph.D.  ‘The Stages of Meditation’ are grouped into three ‘journeys’ of seven stages each. "Acceptance brings peace. I know this from personal experience. I'll start by telling you my story. I am an active, middle aged woman who had a rollerblading accident and landed on my head.  I don't remember the accident. I do remember waking up in the intensive care unit at the hospital. I didn't know where I was, why I was there or even how long I had been there. It turns out that I had what they called 'moderate brain trauma'.

"I went from being an intelligent, fit, person to one that couldn't watch TV because the flickering lights and images freaked out my brain, couldn't read a book because my eyes wouldn't track on the page and I couldn't remember what was happening in the story. Moving my body was slow and pretty limited. No balance.

"I could have reacted in a number of ways. I could have gotten deeply depressed. After all I was a single mom who couldn't drive, get groceries, cook, do laundry, let alone oversee the kids and get them where they needed to go. My sons were 12 and 15 at the time. I could have been angry or frustrated.

"Instead I chose to experience acceptance. This is what I can do right now, in this moment. What could I do? I could meditate. I had signed-up to start Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training at KYL in Chicago prior to the accident. We were given a meditation to do for the 40 days before the start of the course. The meditation is called Kirtan Kriya and uses the syllables Sa Ta Na Ma.  [get meditation].

"It didn't matter if I couldn't sit up in a 'traditional' meditation posture. Reclining on the couch worked just fine. I kept working with the idea, 'what can I do right now?' I would try something and if I couldn't do it, I accepted it for that point in time. I meditated some times more frequently than once a day. I could do it. I did it a lot!

"It turns out that Kirtan Kriya -- the meditation that I was diligently practicing since I couldn't do much else except watch the fish and sleep -- was exactly what my brain needed. Kirtan Kriya is designed to heal the frontal lobes. My left frontal lobe was the part of my brain damaged by the accident. I’m no doctor, but, even I could see how different it looked from the rest of the brain when I saw the CAT scan when they took out the stitches and staples.

"I told my brain to heal itself. I have an obedient brain and it did as it was told. I gave it the tools to do so -- Kirtan Kriya. Little by little the things that I could do started outweighing what I couldn't do. I kept up with the meditation regardless. I started Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training 7 weeks after the accident. I realized that falling on my head taught me many of life's biggest lessons -- including acceptance.

"It doesn't matter how old or young you are. There are always things that you can and cannot do. The question is really do you accept where you are right now? Things change with each moment. Start observing each moment and don't be judgmental. Realize that this is the way it is right now. This is your chance to start practicing acceptance.

"You may find some parts of a meditation or kriya* simple. You may have limitations that make some parts not physically doable. Visualize your body doing the meditation or posture even if you can't do it right now. Keep the breath moving as directed even if you need to take a break at some point. You will reap the benefits so long as that is your intention. Listen to your body. You are your own teacher."
*In Kundalini Yoga a ‘kriya’ is a sequence of postures, breath and sound that are integrated together to allow for manifestation of a particular state, for example, a clear mind or a healthy liver.

* Japji is a prayer which relates the conscious mind to the soul.  It is one of the daily prayers of the Sikhs.  ‘Jap-’ is often translated as ‘song of’ and ‘-ji’ as ‘the soul.’  As a result, Japji is called ‘the song of the soul.’
** Gurudakshina is tithing, or, an offering as an expression of gratitude for the teachings.  ‘-Dakshina’ will give ‘drib drishtee.’  You will start seeing the unseen.  It will mega-multiply you financially, socially and personally.

New Moon
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."

Waxing Moon
... is the time between the New Moon and the day before the Full Moon. During this time the energy of the body moves into your higher centers (chakras). This is the time to bring new things, new people or new relationships into your life or to accelerate the progress of your special projects.

11 Days After New Moon
Yogi Bhajan taught that this is the day when you are in balance. The glandular system readjusts itself on this day. Your metabolism is changing, so if you eat very lightly (green foods) or if you live just on water and lemon today, your health will be perfect. Eat very lightly during the day. Eat only one meal and drink lemon and water the rest of the day.

Full Moon
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum, so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it, you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous causing side effect.)

Waning Moon
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought of as the best time to start a new project.
