Yoga for Radiance and Victory
at KYL  - Sunday - 10:30 am

Featuring music from Snatam Kaur’s new ‘Ras’ CD!

You need a strong electromagnetic field, or, aura, to be able to contain and sustain your energy and projection. “Your radiance should be so strong, that even if a hateful person sees you, it should totally neutralize the other person’s psyche so that they experience nothing but love and friendship,” said Yogi Bhajan about this very topic.

Come to class this Sunday, enjoy new music from Snatam Kaur and learn to:
• Develop your ‘inner shine’ to emit confidence, trust and grace;
• Reach success when you don’t feel up to the job;
• Expand the brilliance of your aura, and
• Strengthen your magnetic field for protection against negativity, fear and hatred.

... with a delicious veggie potluck afterwards!

Healing Power of Triple Gong & Mantra
Friday - August 19 - 6:30 to 7:45 pm
Kundalini Yoga in the Loop (KYL)
The Fine Arts Building - Suite 501

featuring Shakta and Friends

Bring a friend and join us for one of our most popular monthly sessions of triple gong and mantra! As always, we begin every ‘Healing Power of Gong & Mantra’ session with light Kundalini Yoga to prepare the body for what’s to come (the yoga is appropriate for all levels). Then we move into deep relaxation with not one, but three beautiful Paiste symphonic gongs.

Your mind will have no defense to the gong after 90 seconds!

After the gong we use sound (mantra) to remind us that the entire universe was built on sound, on vibration. And, as we vibrate a particular combination of sounds, we are able to tune into a different level of intelligence, or, consciousness. Fee just $17 at-the-door. Or,

Saturday, August 20
10:30 am to 12 noon
$15 adv/$20 door

You walk. You breathe. But, how often do you meditatively synchronize your breath with your walking steps? That is called Breathwalk® -- the simple, natural and effective walking practice derived from the Kundalini Yoga tradition. In this special session with Shakta you’ll experience how easy it is to change your mood, energy level and mental state as you systematically align your body, mind and spirit. This class is suitable for anyone who likes to walk -- yogis and non-yogis alike! All levels welcome. Hand-out provided. Click Here to register.

Paiste Symphonic Gongs
Going, Going, Gongs!

Available for Sale at KYL
When you come to class at KYL you know that all of our teachers love using our beautiful Paiste gongs during deep relaxation and also for meditation. And, we are pleased to once again be able to offer you beautiful Paiste symphonic gongs for purchase.

The gongs come in three different sizes—either 28, 30 or 32 inches packaged with a mallet, floor stand and carrying case. Shipping to just about anywhere in North America is convenient via Federal Express. Or, we can arrange for a private session where you can come by KYL and try out a gong before your purchase.

KYL’s gong prices are 10% off of retail (before shipping). A 28 inch package (gong, mallet, stand, carrying case) is $1,332 check/cash; a 30 inch package $1,499; and a 32 inch package $1,647.  Note, prices are +3% when paying with a credit card.

Yogi Bhajan said that the
Gong is the sound of creation. All sounds and all words have come from it. It is the nucleus of all words. It is the multiple, projective sound to put you through. It is not a drum or a musical instrument. It is God. It is reinforced vibration. It is like a million strings vibrating at once. Only instrument in which you can create the space vibrations - where you can become weightless and soundless and go through it. We use all tools with only one purpose that a person should come to a state of affirmativity. Life becomes ‘yes’ to you. The word ‘no’ should be eliminated from your vocabulary.
If you’re interested in purchasing a beautiful Paiste Symphonic gong call 312-922-4699.

Destiny Changed...

Part 3 of 3
(Day 18 of 40 - 2.5 Hours of Long Ek Ong Kar)

Click Here to read Part 2 - You Saved My Life

“On one of those fall days in 2003 while Hari Dev Singh was in the hospital a CD arrived in the mail.  It was ‘Shanti’ by Snatam Kaur.  I was anxious to hear the new musical selections.  But when I played ‘Shanti’ for the first time I just didn’t connect with much of what I heard.  And although the first track contained the words, ‘Ek Ong Kar,’ the rest of the track really annoyed me.  However, for some reason I knew I needed to learn the mantra on track #1 and chant it—a lot.

The liner notes explained that the words were by Guru Nanak, the first of the Sikh Gurus (1469 to 1538).  One of Guru Nanak’s gifts to humanity is the sacred composition called Japji (the song of the soul).  It contains 38 pauris (stanzas).  Each pauri has a particular effect.  This was the 38th Pauri.

So, after my 2.5 hour practice of Long Ek Ong Kar each morning, I’d open the liner notes and practice this stanza of Japji along with the ‘Shanti’ CD.  This track played on repeat 24 hours a day.  On the days Hari Dev was home from the hospital he would sigh and ask, ‘why are you playing that over and over again?’  I really didn’t know why, but, I kept playing it, repeating the syllables out loud.

It was only after I came home from that very long day in October (which began with four paramedics reviving Hari Dev Singh) did I read the effects of this particular pauri.  There it was, clear and simple, yet I had missed it all along.  The 38th pauri gives you the power to re-write your own destiny.  Destiny.  Hari Dev.  Ambulance.  Emergency room.  It all became clear.  'He’s still here because I had to chant this,' I said to myself.

‘Thank you God and Guru,’ were my next words.  The gratitude I felt at that instant was overwhelming.  I was grateful to my 2.5 hour practice of Long Ek Ong Kar for expanding my sensitivity to my intuition.  And, I was grateful to my intuition for nudging me to play that pauri over and over--even if my ego didn’t understand why.”

“I Will Never Be the Same Again”

Teacher Training at KYL
Partial Scholarships Available
10 Weekends Over 8 Months - Oct. 28 to May 6

A note from Shakta Kaur:  “I will never be the same again,” is what we often hear from those who have taken Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training at KYL .  My initial motivation was to deepen my personal yoga and meditation practice.  And, in truth, I had no intention of teaching Kundalini Yoga.  I already had a degree in music education and had taught public school music for several years.  I really thought that my teaching days were over!

It wasn’t long, however, before I found myself informally sharing the techniques I’d learned during Teacher Training not only with my friends and family, but with the loan officer at our bank and other business contacts.  I laughed out loud when I realized that I was, in fact, ‘teaching!’

Whatever draws you to this amazing course in Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan, know that the end result will be perfect for you even while it might also be totally different than what you initially expected.  Along the way your mental, physical and emotional growth will be enhanced in a supportive and cozy environment.  You will learn the tools to not only deepen your own personal practice, but, you will also gain the knowledge and self-confidence to elevate yourself and others into a more peaceful and powerful space.

PAYING IT FORWARD...  The Devi Scholarship
A Partial Scholarship for KYL’s Teacher Training Course - Application Deadline Sept. 1
“Sunia Sidh Peer Sur Naath” -- Japji, Pauri 8
‘By hearing God’s Name the mortal becomes a perfect person, religious guide, spiritual hero and a great yogi.’

These words are from Japji,* a meditative prayer, chanted by Kundalini yogis worldwide during the early morning hours.  And these words were the inspiration behind the creation of a special scholarship fund—the Devi Scholarship—available to applicants of Chicago’s Kundalini Yoga in the Loop (KYL) 220-hour Yoga Alliance (YA) registered Teacher Training course.

These words took hold in the soul of one of our first graduates.  His response was to begin a scholarship fund with personal funds so that whoever wanted to take the incredible journey called Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training as taught by Yogi Bhajan® could do so regardless of financial need.  He named the fund after his mother, Devi Kaur, because it was she who urged him to take his first Kundalini Yoga class.  It was his way of paying back for all that he had received from the course—gurudakshina** of another sort.

Once the formation of the scholarship fund was announced it wasn’t long before his fellow teachers-in-training contributed their own money--to ‘pay it forward’--as one of them said.  Soon we began receiving e-mails like this one from a Devi Scholarship recipient:

“Shakta, I wanted you and Hari Dev Singh to know that the Devi Scholarship (which enabled me to take Teacher Training) has SAVED my life... literally.  I was broke in more ways than one.  I needed much healing in both body and mind.  You knew that my financial situation was such that without the scholarship I would not have been able to take the course.  What you don’t know is that I believe Kundalini Yoga has healed both my body from Chron's Disease and my brain from its Bi-Polar behavior.  It truly has been a medicine of the divine.  I constantly see changes in me that I know are a result of the Teacher Training course.  I now have a new hope in my life.  None of this would have been possible without the Devi Scholarship.  I thank you and all the teachers before me who made this possible.”

Devi Scholarship hopefuls complete an application form that requires answers to six questions (download form).  With the application they include a monetary deposit indicating to the universe their commitment to take the course.  They are asked to write a biography of themselves; to describe a teacher of any kind whom they admire; to describe their current yoga practice; and to write about their motivation to take Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training.  They also need to offer some proof of their financial need.  Finally, personal interviews are conducted to determine which candidates will eventually receive a Devi Scholarship.

The application deadline for this fall’s Devi Scholarship recipients is Thursday, September 1.  Click Here to access the Devi Scholarship application form.

* Japji is a prayer which relates the conscious mind to the soul.  It is one of the daily prayers of the Sikhs.  ‘Jap-’ is often translated as ‘song of’ and ‘-ji’ as ‘the soul.’  As a result, Japji is called ‘the song of the soul.’

** Gurudakshina is tithing, or, an offering as an expression of gratitude for the teachings.  ‘-Dakshina’ will give ‘drib drishtee.’  You will start seeing the unseen.  It will mega-multiply you financially, socially and personally.

Moon Watch

New Moon - July 30

11 Days After - August 10

Full Moon - August 13

(Above Dates Adjusted for Central Time Zone)
New Moon
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."

Waxing Moon
... is the time between the New Moon and the day before the Full Moon. During this time the energy of the body moves into your higher centers (chakras). This is the time to bring new things, new people or new relationships into your life or to accelerate the progress of your special projects.

11 Days After New Moon
Yogi Bhajan taught that this is the day when you are in balance. The glandular system readjusts itself on this day. Your metabolism is changing, so if you eat very lightly (green foods) or if you live just on water and lemon today, your health will be perfect. Eat very lightly during the day. Eat only one meal and drink lemon and water the rest of the day.

Full Moon
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum, so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it, you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous causing side effect.)

Waning Moon
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought of as the best time to start a new project.

A Thought From Yogi Bhajan
Come to Oneness. Realize and be grateful that God has created you.
