Healing Power of
Triple Gong & Mantra - Full Moon
July 15 - 6:30 to 7:45 pm
Kundalini Yoga in the Loop (KYL)
The Fine Arts Building - Suite 501
"It’s not like anything they compare it to – the summer moon." – Basho
Bring a friend and join us for one of our most popular monthly sessions of
triple gong and mantra! As always, we begin every ‘Healing Power of Gong & Mantra’ session with light Kundalini Yoga to prepare the body for what’s to come (the yoga is appropriate for all levels). Then we move into deep relaxation with not one, but
three beautiful Paiste symphonic gongs.
Your mind will have no defense to the gong after 90 seconds!
After the gong we use sound (mantra) to remind us that the entire universe was
built on sound, on vibration. And, as we vibrate a particular combination of
sounds, we are able to tune into a different level of intelligence, or,
consciousness. Fee just $17 at-the-door. Or,

"Yoga for Radiance and Victory"
at Kundalini Yoga in
Radiance is your projection. When you walk into a room what do you project to those already there? When you enter is everyone’s attention unconsciously drawn in your direction? Can your presence uplift someone who is down? Can you uplift someone across the room? Someone you’ve never even met before? When you have a strong radiant body you have to be able to stand all the attention and projection you attract!
This inner light of yours needs a strong electromagnetic field, or, aura, to be able to contain and sustain your energy and projection. “Your radiance should be so strong, that even if a hateful person sees you, it should totally neutralize the other person’s psyche so that they experience nothing but love and friendship,” said Yogi Bhajan about this very topic.
Come to Kundalini Yoga in the Loop (KYL) during the summer months for classes especially designed to...
• Expand the brilliance of your aura;
• Strengthen your magnetic field for protection against negativity, fear and hatred;
• Cultivate your presence to heal, deliver and lead;
• Develop your ‘inner shine’ to emit confidence, trust and grace; and
• Be the light to illumine every dark corner of the world!

This Saturday, July 16

You walk. You breathe. But, how often do you meditatively synchronize your breath with your walking steps? That is called Breathwalk® -- the simple, natural and effective walking practice derived from the Kundalini Yoga tradition. In this special session with Shakta you’ll experience how easy it is to change your mood, energy level and mental state as you systematically align your body, mind and spirit.
This class is suitable for anyone who likes to walk -- yogis and non-yogis alike! All levels welcome. Hand-out provided.

2.5 Hours of Meditation
Sunday, July 17 - 4 am
Long Ek Ong
Kar (Morning Call)
Once each year Shakta’s daily sadhana*** is 2.5 hours of chanting and meditating on
"Long Ek Ong Kar." She begins on her and Hari Dev’s wedding anniversary (July 18) and ends on Yogi Bhajan’s birthday (August 26). This year, because July 18th is a Monday, Shakta thought that you might like to join her and Hari Dev chanting Long Ek Ong Kar on Sunday morning, July 17th.
ScheduleLong Ek Ong Kar (also called Morning Call) opens the eight chakras (junction points of body and spirit). It was the first (and only) mantra that Yogi Bhajan taught during his first year in the United States. You might think about lighting up the chakras starting with the root / first chakra while chanting each syllable of this mantra.
4:00 am –
4:20 am – Warm-Ups
4:30 am – Long Ek Ong Kar (Morning Call)
7:00 am – Hukam**
7:15 am – Breakfast Snacks
Mantra: Ek Ong Kar Sat Naam Siri Wha-hay Guru
What Yogi Bhajan said about Long Ek Ong Kar: “Before sunrise, when the channels of energy are most clear, if this mantra is sung in sweet harmony, you will be one with the Lord. This will open your solar plexus, charging the solar center, connecting it with cosmic energy. You will be liberated from the cycles of karma that bind you to the earth. No tongue can tell how bright the light of cosmic energy is, but when you recite this mantra daily, you will have this light within you.”
Meaning of the Mantra: “The creator and all creation are one. This is our true identity. The ecstasy of this wisdom is Great beyond words.”
There is no charge for this early morning sadhana. Delicious Yogi Tea will be served. Bring some breakfast snacks to share afterward!
* Japji Sahib – A prayer written by Guru Nanak which relates the conscious mind to the soul.
** Hukam – The order of the day.
*** Sadhana – A daily spiritual practice.
Chicago's Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training Program
“I Will Never Be the Same Again”
Teacher Training at KYL
Partial Scholarships Available
Weekends Over 8 Months - Oct. 28 to May 6
A note from Shakta Kaur: “I will never be the same again,”
is what we often hear from those who have taken Kundalini Yoga
Teacher Training at KYL . My initial motivation was to
deepen my personal yoga and meditation practice. And, in
truth, I had no intention of teaching Kundalini Yoga. I
already had a degree in music education and had taught public
school music for several years. I really thought that my
teaching days were over!
It wasn’t long, however, before I found myself informally sharing
the techniques I’d learned during Teacher Training not only with
my friends and family, but with the loan officer at our bank and
other business contacts. I laughed out loud when I
realized that I was, in fact, ‘teaching!’
Whatever draws you to this amazing course in Kundalini Yoga as
taught by Yogi Bhajan, know that the end result will be perfect
for you even while it might also be totally different than what
you initially expected. Along the way your mental,
physical and emotional growth will be enhanced in a supportive
and cozy environment. You will learn the tools to not only
deepen your own personal practice, but, you will also gain the
knowledge and self-confidence to elevate yourself and others
into a more peaceful and powerful space.

|PAYING IT FORWARD... The Devi Scholarship
A Partial Scholarship for KYL’s Teacher Training Course
- Application Deadline Sept. 1
“Sunia Sidh Peer Sur Naath” -- Japji, Pauri 8
‘By hearing God’s Name the mortal becomes a perfect person,
religious guide, spiritual hero and a great yogi.’
These words are from Japji,* a
meditative prayer, chanted by Kundalini yogis worldwide during the
early morning hours. And these words were the inspiration
behind the creation of a special scholarship fund—the Devi
Scholarship—available to applicants of Chicago’s Kundalini Yoga
in the Loop (KYL) 220-hour Yoga Alliance (YA) registered Teacher
These words took hold in the soul of one of our
first graduates. His response was to begin a scholarship fund
with personal funds so that whoever wanted to take the incredible
journey called Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training as taught by Yogi
Bhajan® could do so regardless of financial need. He named the
fund after his mother, Devi Kaur, because it was she who urged him
to take his first Kundalini Yoga class. It was his way of
paying back for all that he had received from the course—gurudakshina**
of another sort.
Once the formation of the scholarship fund was
announced it wasn’t long before his fellow teachers-in-training
contributed their own money--to ‘pay it forward’--as one of them
said. Soon we began receiving e-mails like this one from a
Devi Scholarship recipient:
“Shakta, I wanted you and Hari Dev
Singh to know that the Devi Scholarship (which enabled me to take
Teacher Training) has SAVED my life...
literally. I was broke in more ways than one. I needed
much healing in both body and mind. You knew that my financial
situation was such that without the scholarship I would not have
been able to take the course. What you don’t know is that I
believe Kundalini Yoga has healed both my body from Chron's Disease
and my brain from its Bi-Polar behavior. It truly has been a
medicine of the divine. I constantly see changes in me that I
know are a result of the Teacher Training course. I now have a
new hope in my life. None of this would have been possible
without the Devi Scholarship. I thank you and all the teachers
before me who made this possible.”
Here for more stories.]
Devi Scholarship hopefuls complete an
application form that requires answers to six questions (download
With the application they include a monetary deposit indicating to
the universe their commitment to take the course. They are
asked to write a biography of themselves; to describe a teacher of
any kind whom they admire; to describe their current yoga practice;
and to write about their motivation to take Kundalini Yoga Teacher
Training. They also need to offer some proof of their
financial need. Finally, personal interviews are conducted to
determine which candidates will eventually receive a Devi
deadline for this fall’s Devi Scholarship recipients is Thursday,

* Japji is a
prayer which relates the conscious mind to the soul. It is one
of the daily prayers of the Sikhs. ‘Jap-’ is often translated
as ‘song of’ and ‘-ji’ as ‘the soul.’ As a result, Japji is
called ‘the song of the soul.’
** Gurudakshina is tithing, or, an offering as an expression of
gratitude for the teachings. ‘-Dakshina’ will give ‘drib
drishtee.’ You will start seeing the unseen. It will
mega-multiply you financially, socially and personally.
Two New Teachers
for Thursday Classes
||Aman Jiwan Kaur
(Miriam Dasic) - 12:15 pm
We are happy to announce that one of our newest graduates —Aman Jiwan Kaur — has agreed to teach regularly at KYL! Aman Jiwan has practiced Kundalini Yoga and Meditation for over five years and recently completed Level 1 Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training at KYL. Her travel schedule for work kept interrupting her plans to enter Teacher Training, but, as Aman Jiwan said, “It took me awhile to get here, but, I finally did it.”
If you’ve taken one of Aman Jiwan’s classes you know that she has a terrific sense of humor that helps you ‘keep up’ during a kriya. Along with that keen sense of humor is the sense of peace that you feel when you’re in Aman Jiwan’s presence. That is her vibration and part of her spiritual name. ‘Aman’ means ‘peace.’ ‘Jiwan’ means ‘life.’ The more she cultivates peace within and around her the more she connects with her own soul.
Come and nurture some peace for yourself in one of Aman Jiwan Kaur’s classes beginning Thursday, July 14 from 12:5 to 1:00 pm.

||Har Rai Kaur
(Christina Reddington) - 6 pm
One of our favorite substitute teachers — Har Rai Kaur — will now teach regularly at KYL beginning Thursday, July 14th at 6 pm! Har Rai Kaur is a 2010 graduate of KYL’s Level 1 Teacher Training course. She is also an adult nurse practitioner with a focus in integrative medicine. Har Rai finds that by taking a holistic approach to health her patients tend to be more calm, less stressed and also enjoy a higher quality of life.
Before taking Teacher Training Har Rai read somewhere that Kundalini Yoga and Meditation can ‘inspire others and give a general feeling of soundness and goodness.’ “That really resonated with me,” Har Rai Kaur told us, “I immediately thought—that’s how I want to live.”
We are happy that Har Rai Kaur has agreed to teach a
regular weekly class at KYL. Join her on Thursday
evenings from 6-7 pm beginning July 14th. We think
you’ll be glad you did! Click Here to register.
Summer Solstice 2011
Shatka Meets-Up with KYL's
Ramsaran Singh & Ramsaran Kaur
... both of whom had been wanting to experience Summer Solstice Sadhana Celebration at Ram Das Puri in Espanola, New Mexico, for quite some time now, but, couldn’t quite manage to arrange their schedules (and their finances!) to get there. As a 3HO Yoga Center Partner KYL was blessed to offer a ‘free’ Summer Solstice Sadhana Celebration ticket as the top prize in a special raffle to raise money for our Devi Scholarship Fund.
And, wouldn’t you know it, a couple of weeks after purchasing several tickets Ramsaran Singh found out that he’d won the drawing. So he and Ramsaran Kaur cleared their calendars, made their flight arrangements and arrived at Ram Das Puri just in time to take some classes and participate in three days of White Tantric Yoga. Oh, yes, and they were able to celebrate Ramsaran Kaur’s birthday on June 21 together at Summer Solstice, too!

Many who have experienced her return to be touched by her energy again and again. Full Moon - July 15
New Moon - July 30
(Above Dates Adjusted for Central Time Zone)
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest
energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum,
so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your
energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this
day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink
cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought
to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down
so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it,
you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper,
a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous
causing side effect.)
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New
Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations
from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought
of as the best time to start a new project.
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is
a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the
next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
($13) - not on Friday
(After Sunday's class join us for a vegetarian potluck.)

A Thought From Yogi Bhajan
It is a human tendency to like to sleep between 3 am and 6 am. It's natural. But if you can be alert enough to work on your mind, to confront the day, then you are alert enough to take care of your life. The reason you don't get up early is not because you are lazy, tired or overworked-that's all wrong. You do not get up early in the morning because the relationship between you and your mind is not established. Period.
