“Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore...”
We’re in India!
NEW DELHI AIRPORT
We landed in New Delhi at 9:45 pm after a 15 hour non-stop flight from Chicago to be met by representatives of our tour operator. This is a good thing because the sights and sounds that greet you in the New Delhi airport can be overpowering... especially when you’re a bit foggy-headed and feeling tamasic after such a long flight. After we clear customs we are allowed inside the New Delhi airport. The first sight to greet us is literally hundreds of Indian men hanging over wire fencing with signs exhibiting the names of the travelers they are there to meet! Looking into that sea of faces can quickly cause mass confusion to a non-Indian traveling on his/her own. Luckily, most of the members of our tour group of a dozen intrepid travelers joined us for the same non-stop flight, so, if we were going to be confused, we would all be confused together!
The next morning we boarded our
train to Rishikesh where Shakta is teaching Kundalini Yoga and Meditation each morning Feb. 17-21 at the “Ayurveda and Yoga Conference: Where Science Meets Consciousness.”
500 people from around the globe are at this conference.
Rishikesh is known as the “yoga capital of the world.” The Hindu god Shiva is the reigning deity of this region and most of the rivers and lakes are consecrated to his divine presence. Our lodging is at the conference site, the Parmarth Niketan Ashram, on the banks of the holy Ganges River.
H.H. Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, known to many simply as “Muniji,” is the spiritual leader of Parmarth Niketan Ashram
(details). If you have seen the documentary that was made about his life, “A Day in the Light,” you know that Muniji is revered around the world as a living Hindu saint. Each evening at 6 pm Muniji leads both the boys from the ashram orphanage along with all of the Conference participants in an "Aarti." One of the meanings of Aarti literally is "remover of pain."
The Aarti is a Hindu ritual in which a small fire is created in a container on the banks of the Ganges. Many other lamps are lit around a special stage that has been built out over the Ganges directly in front of the ashram. Some of us are lucky enough to participate in the Aarti by moving other much larger lamps in a circular motion... in front of the Infinite... in front of the Ganges... while prayers are chanted and gratitude is given for the day. No matter what religious, spiritual or cultural background, the evening Aarti is a time that is quite moving and inspirational to all. It is a special time for getting closer to the Creator... by whatever name and whatever form one chooses to worship. The daily evening Aarti
has become a favorite highlight of everyone’s stay here in Rishikesh!

By 2001 I had already traveled to India on a tour with Deepak Chopra and was preparing for a trip to Egypt with another spiritual teacher. In the meanwhile I continued to work on my own personal growth and development. It seemed like every weekend I was taking one workshop or another at a bookstore in Chicago called
Transitions was what you’d call an ‘alternative’ book store filled with self-help and new age books, magazines and book chats every evening with various authors. On the weekends
Transitions held workshops and seminars with these very same authors.
On a typical Saturday after attending a workshop I was wandering around the store and saw a table piled high with ‘Meditation as Medicine’ books. ‘Hmm,’ I thought to myself. ‘Now, that sounds interesting.’ The workshop was the
very next Saturday and I wasn’t really prepared to return for more ‘studying’ the very next weekend. So, with just a few seconds of thought I decided
not to attend the ‘Meditation as Medicine’ workshop.
During the intervening week I took a coupon that I had for a free latte at a local Borders bookstore. I went in, ordered my latte and, as was usual at this particular Borders, there was no place to sit in the café. So, I wandered through the book stacks browsing and sipping my latte. As I turned a corner into the ‘new age’ section a book literally flew off the shelf and hit me on the head before dropping to the floor. I picked it up, turned it over and read the title—‘Meditation as Medicine!’ I wish you could have heard me laugh out loud. At the same time I said to myself, ‘OK, God, I guess I’m going to this workshop after all!’
By the time I arrived at Transitions on Saturday, February 3rd
(in 2001) I had already read half of ‘Meditation as Medicine.' And, as was becoming a habit for me on a Saturday morning I found myself with about 30 others waiting for an author to arrive. It wasn’t long before a tall, thin, bearded man wearing a turban walked in with a guitar case. He set himself up near the teaching platform. I wondered if he was the teacher. Then a few minutes later another bearded, turbaned fellow walked in. He introduced himself as the author of ‘Meditation as Medicine,’ Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, MD. ‘Just call me Dr. Dharma,’ he said. ‘And, this is my friend and musician Livtar Singh Khalsa. We’re here to share with you the science and technology of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation.’
What I remember most about that class was first, the sound of the mantras. We practiced Basic Spinal Flex in chairs. But we also chanted. We practiced Kirtan Kriya, the Siri Gaitri Mantra and long Sat Nams. I also remember that Dr. Dharma and Livtar were wearing all white
and that I was wearing all black. Third, although I had been trying other yogas in the months preceding this workshop I knew immediately that ‘this was it’ for me.
At the time, Dr. Dharma had one audio-cassette available called ‘Wake Up to Wellness.’ I purchased a copy and the very next morning Basic Spinal Flex and Kirtan Kriya became my daily sadhana. Shortly after returning from the trip to Egypt I traveled to Rhinebeck, New York, to study with Dr. Dharma and Livtar Singh, along with Dr. Dharma’s wife, Kirti, at a weekend workshop at Omega Institute.
Kundalini Yoga and Meditation had begun to change my life. And, informally I had begun to introduce others to the technology that I was learning, too. It seemed natural to enroll in my first Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training course
(in Chicago) in the fall of 2001. And, by August of 2002 I traveled to Espanola, New Mexico, to
(again) take the Master’s Touch course so that Hari Dev Singh and I could be in the presence of the Master of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan.
February 3rd is the anniversary of my very first Kundalini Yoga and Meditation class,
it is also my mother’s birthday. I’m reminded of that every time I look at my well-worn and highlighted copy of ‘Meditation as Medicine’ which Dr. Dharma signed and dated ten years ago.
You probably don’t need to have a book fall on your head as I did to make a
change in your life. You probably listen to your inner teacher today a lot
more than I did then. And, as funny as it might sound, I am very grateful
that a book fell on my head. I am also grateful that I not only paid
attention but that I had the courage to follow a totally different path than
the one I had traveled up until then.

An Accident, Acceptance and Kirtan Kriya

Acceptance brings peace. I know this from personal experience. I'll start by telling you my story. I am an active, middle aged woman who had a rollerblading accident and landed on my head.
I don't remember the accident. I do remember waking up in the intensive care unit at the hospital. I didn't know where I was, why I was there or even how long I had been there. It turns out that I had what they called “moderate brain trauma”.
I went from being an intelligent, fit, person to one that couldn't watch TV because the flickering lights and images freaked out my brain, couldn't read a book because my eyes wouldn't track on the page and I couldn't remember what was happening in the story. Moving my body was slow and pretty limited. No balance.
I could have reacted in a number of ways. I could have gotten deeply depressed. After all I was a single mom who couldn't drive, get groceries, cook, do laundry, let alone oversee the kids and get them where they needed to go. My sons were 12 and 15 at the time. I could have been angry or frustrated.
Instead I chose to experience acceptance. This is what I can do right now, in this moment. What could I do?? I could meditate. I had signed up to start Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training at KYL in Chicago prior to the accident. We were given a meditation to do for the 40 days before the start of the course. The meditation is called Kirtan Kriya and uses the syllables Sa Ta Na Ma.

It didn't matter if I couldn't sit up in a “traditional” meditation posture. Reclining on the couch worked just fine. I kept working with the idea, “what can I do right now?” I would try something and if I couldn't do it, I accepted it for that point in time. I meditated some times more frequently than once a day. I could do it. I did it a lot!
It turns out that Kirtan Kriya--the meditation that I was diligently practicing since I couldn't do much else except watch the fish and sleep--was exactly what my brain needed. Kirtan Kriya is designed to heal the frontal lobes**. My left frontal lobe was the part of my brain damaged by the accident. I’m no doctor, but, even I could see how different it looked from the rest of the brain when I saw the CAT scan when they took out the stitches and staples.
I told my brain to heal itself. I have an obedient brain and it did as it was told. I gave it the tools to do so--Kirtan Kriya. Little by little the things that I could do started outweighing what I couldn't do. I kept up with the meditation regardless. I started Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training 7 weeks after the accident. I realized that falling on my head taught me many of life's biggest lessons--including acceptance.
It doesn't matter how old or young you are. There are always things that you can and cannot do. The question is really do you accept where you are right now? Things change with each moment. Start observing each moment and don't be judgmental. Realize that this is the way it is right now. This is your chance to start practicing acceptance.
You may find some parts of a meditation or kriya* simple. You may have limitations that make some parts not physically doable. Visualize your body doing the meditation or posture even if you can't do it right now. Keep the breath moving as directed even if you need to take a break at some point. You will reap the benefits so long as that is your intention. Listen to your body. You are your own teacher.

WHAT IS IT?
White Tantric Yoga® (WTY) is world-renowned as one of the most powerful and beautiful of all subtle energy practices. It is an integral part of the Kundalini Yoga experience. It enables you to break through deep subconscious blocks, so that your mind, body, and soul can act together as one. As a path to personal freedom and awareness, it has been said that this practice can bring success to every area of your life.
WTY is done in pairs as a group meditation. You sit facing a partner and follow instructions given on DVD by the Mahan Tantric, Yogi Bhajan, and repeated by the course facilitator. Every course is facilitated in person by a representative of the Mahan Tantric.
Each WTY course consists of between six and eight kriyas. A WTY kriya is a meditation incorporating a yoga posture, mudra (hand position), eye focus (dristi) and mental focus. Sometimes the meditations are accompanied by music. The meditations vary in length from 11 to 62 minutes. There are breaks in between each mediation.
WHAT TO EXPECT
There are no prerequisites for participating in White Tantric Yoga. Beginners will tune into their internal energies and enjoy a deep and sometimes challenging meditative experience. More advanced meditators will deepen their experience and make new inroads to their spiritual awareness.
The mere act of registering for a White Tantric Course sends an intention--a message to the universe--that you’re looking for a change and that you want to cleanse yourself. Some people have very specific intentions for White Tantric Yoga. They might have an intention of getting rid of “X,” to heal “Y” or to understand “Z.” In the alternative, if you have an unpleasant memory, you can bring that thought and find relief at White Tantric Yoga—you don’t have to go through it over and over again.
WHAT TO WEAR
Wear loose fitting and
comfortable white or light-colored clothing. White combines all
the colors and enhances the magnetic field. Bring a white cotton
head covering that will stay securely on your head (...there will
be white head coverings available to purchase at WTY if you
forget yours or don’t have one). Wearing a head covering is for
your personal growth and upliftment. It also helps keep your
positive energy within. Wear shoes that slip on and off easily
because White Tantric Yoga is practiced with the feet uncovered.

You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest
energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum,
so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your
energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this
day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink
cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought
to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down
so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it,
you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper,
a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous
causing side effect.)
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New
Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations
from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought
of as the best time to start a new project.
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest... energy-wise. It is
a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the
next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."
