Guru Nanak's Birthday!

Full Moon
Early Morning Sadhana
Sunday, November 21
4:00 to 6:30 am

Come and celebrate Guru Nanak’s Birthday!
This month we offer the experience of a full moon early morning sadhana at KYL. This is also the day we celebrate the birthday of the first of the Sikh saints, or, gurus, Guru Nanak. So, come join us this Sunday morning at 4:00 am when the rays of the sun are hitting the earth at a 60 degree angle. Why get up at this time? Because this is the time when all of the great spiritual teachers appear to bless, elevate and transform each one of us.

Our schedule:
4:00 am – Japji (meditative prayer)
4:25 am – Kundalini Yoga
5:10 am – Aquarian Sadhana Mantras*
6:15 am – Hukam** and the Long Time Sunshine Song
6:30 am – Breakfast at Shakta and Hari Dev’s condominium.

The doors to the Fine Arts Building (FAB) open at 3:30 am. Please time your arrival for 3:45 am. We begin sadhana at 4:00 am. The doors to the FAB will be locked again at 4:15 am.

* Yogi Bhajan gave a specific sequence of mantras on June 21, 1992, with instructions to use them for morning sadhana for 21 years, until the year 2013. The order of the mantras is 1) Long Ek Ong Kar, 2) Wah Yantee, Kah Yantee, 3) the Mul Mantra, 4) Sat Siree, Siree Akal, 5) Rakhe Rakhanahaar, 6) Wahe Guru Wahe Jio, and 7) the Guru Ram Das chant.

** A ‘hukam’ is the ‘divine order’ or quote of the day.

"Nanak, the True Guru, appeared like a radiant light,
shining to dispel the darkness of the world.
He came like the sun and the stars, shining forth
to take away the darkness."
On the night of a full moon, in what is now known as Pakistan, Guru Nanak was born. When he came into the world (1469-1539) it was said that the wise of the community could hear celestial music. The family astrologer, on seeing the baby, greeted him with joined hands declaring that he would sit under a royal canopy and that he would be worshipped by Hindus and Muslims alike.+

The story goes that Guru Nanak went to the river to meditate. He was gone for three days. He emerged from the water of the river after three days and the first words he spoke were the words of Japji.++

When Nanak was in his 20s he left his family and traveled with his two companions, Bala, a Hindu and Mardana, a Muslim. For Nanak there was no difference between the everyday life and the spiritual life. He worked as a farmer and supplied free food from a common kitchen where all--regardless of caste or religion--were fed from the same platform. As he traveled and taught he explained to people in practical ways the ecstasy of chanting the name of the Divine. Most important, he gave them the technical know-how to reach that higher stage of consciousness themselves. He taught that the breath of life comes to humanity from the Infinite source of energy, which is undying and unborn.

Those who gathered around Guru Nanak were known in the Punjabi language as ‘sikhs’—disciples of the Guru—both of Guru Nanak and the Universal Guru/Creator/Divine Teacher whose wisdom and teachings Nanak humbly manifested.
+ Excerpted from the book, ‘Guru for the Aquarian Age: The Life and Teachings of Guru Nanak,’ with an introduction by Yogi Bhajan. Available for purchase ($12.95 plus shipping). Click Here to order.

++ Japji is a meditative prayer that will recalibrate your mind, heal your body and balance your chakras. It is "naad," the essence of all sound. Naad gives you the experience of infinity within the finite.

The dawn of the Aquarian Age!

“This is the Age of Aquarius, in which we worship God through our own soul. This is the sole purpose of this life." -- Yogi Bhajan
The Master of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan, used his intuitive clarity to focus and prepare us for the times that we are transiting through right now – the change from the Piscean Age to the Aquarian Age. He discerned that the dawning of the Age of Aquarius would be precisely at 11:30 am (PST) on November 11, 2011.*

Measurable Time Period
The Aquarian Age is a measurable time period. It is an astrological age, i.e., a time period that parallels major changes in the development of the human race. Each astrological age roughly corresponds to the time taken for the vernal equinox to move through one of the twelve constellations of the zodiac. It takes a little over 2,100 years for our Solar System to travel through each of the signs or constellations.

So, the psyche of the planet changes every 2,000 years or thereabouts. All the stars come into alignment and the angle of the sun’s rays change by one degree.

Change of the Age
What is this change exactly? In essence it is humanity’s transition from adolescence to maturity. The old Piscean Age was dominated by machines and hierarchy. The motto of the Piscean Age was “I want to know.” The task was to gain access to the right information. There were special places of study accessible to the few who could qualify or had a particular destiny.

The Aquarian Age is to be ruled by awareness, experience, information and a new level of consciousness. The motto of the Aquarian Age is “I know, therefore I believe.” Change and learning are continuous and life-long. There are no longer any well-kept secrets in the Aquarian Age!

The switch on 11.11.11 won’t happen instantaneously. It will take until about the year 2038 for all of the values of the Aquarian Age to be truly embedded into society. But, by that time, the opportunity for peace to prevail as reality and a new, more enlightened consciousness to express itself among human beings will truly be recognized as the gifts of the Age.

Yogi Bhajan explained that this period of transition from the Piscean to the Aquarian Age would bring increasingly greater turmoil and upheaval to the planet. As we move even closer to the transition date of 11.11.11 confusion abounds. Depression is the ‘common cold’ of many. Conflicts tend to arise as the old ways of holding power all fight their last fights.

Nothing can remain hidden. We see that manifested every day. People are waking up. For some this brings fear and for others, joy. He predicted that ‘there will be a feeling of emptiness inside that will increase every year.’ And, he gave a meditation to help minimize the effects of this process.

Many in the worldwide community of Kundalini Yoga began a 1,000 day practice of this meditation--Sat Siri Siri Akal--on February 14, 2009, to help bring in the Aquarian Age. You may join in at any time! Your projection will add to the upliftment of humanity no matter when you decide to begin. The goal is that each of us enters the Aquarian Age awake, aware and joyous.

DVD Available
To purchase your copy of the ‘1,000 Day Meditation’ DVD with Yogi Bhajan originally teaching this mantra in class on February 5, 1992, with both an 11- and 31-minute version of the meditation ($16.95 + shipping), Click Here.

Jan. 22-23 and March 19-20, 2011

Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada
June 11-12 and Oct. 15-16, 2011
Walking is the #1 recommended form of exercise for people of all ages and all ability levels. Breathwalk® is a walking meditation practice derived from Kundalini Yoga that combines yogic knowledge with western scientific methods. This combination is proven more effective than ‘just walking,’ with many other added benefits including increased mental clarity, increased vitality, an elevation in mood levels and a greater sense of wellbeing and connectedness. Many spiritual traditions use walking as a meditation to calm the mind, connect to nature and for healing. Breathwalk is a simple, yet profoundly effective mental and physical fitness program. Breathwalk uses a variety of different breath patterns, timed with your footsteps, to effect a change in your mood and energy level.

And, there are 20 different Breathwalks from which to choose! For example, you could use Breathwalk to promote ‘Energy and Vitality’ or ‘Weight Control and Overall Fitness.’ If you’ve been a prisoner of your mind lately you could choose a Breathwalk that shifts you from ‘Anxious to Calm’ or from ‘Scattered to Focused.’ A fantastic ‘after work’ Breathwalk moves you from ‘Distracted, Busy and Hyperactive to Receptive and Intimate.’ There are even Breathwalks to increase ‘Emotional Presence,’ ‘Intuition’ and ‘Spiritual Abundance.’ The choices are unique, varied and always effective!

Join Shakta for a rejuvenating, refreshing and simply remarkable weekend learning to use and teach Breathwalk—not only for your health and well-being but also to uplift the lives of many others.

Two levels of Breathwalk training are offered, in both Tallahassee and PEI:

Weekend One – Personal Intensive - $250.  This one-weekend training is mainly experiential, moving through several different programs which provide stress relief, mental clarity, mood control and anxiety reduction.

Weekend Two – Instructor Training - $750.  Breathwalk Instructors take both weekends. The second weekend builds upon the first focusing on understanding the application of Breathwalk programs, working with diverse groups of Breathwalkers and mastering the skills of teaching Breathwalk to others. (the day after Thanksgiving)
6:30 pm to 7:45 pm

($15 in advance / $17 at door)

Join us for our popular monthly sessions of gong and mantra.  As always, we begin every ‘Healing Power of Gong & Mantra’ session with light Kundalini Yoga to prepare the body for what’s to come (the yoga is appropriate for all levels). Then we move into deep relaxation with not one, but two beautiful Paiste symphonic gongs. Your mind will have no defense to the gong after 90 seconds!

After the gong we use sound (mantra) to remind us that the entire universe was built on sound, on vibration. And, as we vibrate a particular combination of sounds, we are able to tune into a different level of intelligence, or, consciousness.

Feb. 14–28, 2011
(optional extension to March 2)
"A yatra is a journey on earth to one's isht, one's higher self, one's altar, so destiny may not be altered and one can travel to the destiny. Walk on land with one's feet where all the great men's feet have already walked. It is a self-purification." - Yogi Bhajan
FOR ALL SPIRITUAL SEEKERS, TRAVEL TO INDIA HAS A SPECIAL APPEAL. The very land is steeped in spirituality, where many ancient practices were developed and perfected over 5,000 years ago. Simply walking the land can leave a profound and lasting imprint on your soul. To transform your life sometimes requires a journey which will change the way you view yourself and the world.

This is the third tour to India that Shakta and Hari Dev have led with the guidance of tour operator Deepak Singh of Spiritual Journeys. While maintaining all the comforts of home you will have the profound experience of India; absorbing the rich spiritual traditions while enjoying safe food, excellent lodging and the guidance of experienced staff.

Highlights of our tour include:
• Participating in the 5-day Punarnava conference “Ayurveda and Yoga: Where Science Meets Consciousness” held in Rishikesh (the yoga capital of the world);
• Visiting the sacred Golden Temple in Amritsar;
• Seeing the Taj Mahal in Agra on a beautiful sunrise tour;
• Washing away your karmas in the Mother River Ganges;
• Visiting Old and New Delhi;
• Walking the holy ground where Lord Buddha spoke his first sermon after 'awakening' (optional extension tour to Sarnath/Varanasi).

The BBC has listed the Golden Temple and Taj Mahal as two of the top ten sites to visit in the world. The basic tour fee of $1,935 (until January 15) includes the conference, comfortable lodging, sacred ceremonies, breakfast daily and English-speaking guides throughout the trip (land only – airfare to and from India is approximately $1,300 additional). Besides visiting the great religious and cultural sites, and walking in the footsteps of the Masters, our tour also provides time to “shop with Shakta” in the bazaars (an experience in and of itself!) and partake in local customs and ceremonies.  The optional extension tour is $400 additional.  For more information click here.

Moon Watch

New Moon - November 5

11 Days After - November 16

Full Moon - November 21

(Above Dates Adjusted for Central Time Zone)
New Moon
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."

Waxing Moon
... is the time between the New Moon and the day before the Full Moon. During this time the energy of the body moves into your higher centers (chakras). This is the time to bring new things, new people or new relationships into your life or to accelerate the progress of your special projects.

11 Days After New Moon
Yogi Bhajan taught that this is the day when you are in balance. The glandular system readjusts itself on this day. Your metabolism is changing, so if you eat very lightly (green foods) or if you live just on water and lemon today, your health will be perfect. Eat very lightly during the day. Eat only one meal and drink lemon and water the rest of the day.

Full Moon
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum, so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it, you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous causing side effect.)

A Thought From Yogi Bhajan
Each posture has a profit. Each kriya has an Infinity. Other yogas teach you postures and philosophy. Kundalini Yoga has one simple thing--kriya. You do, you get it and you never ‘do do’ again.
