Sacred Chant Concert
Accessing Personal Peace through Sound & Mantra
with Dev Suroop Kaur
Monday - September 13
- 7 to 9
Come join us in a celebration of the power of sound and mantra in an evening of chant and transformation with Dev Suroop Kaur. Dev Suroop promises an ‘instructional concert’ utilizing the technology of Yoga, spiritual wisdom, devotion, the intuitive knowledge of the Shabd*, chanting and unbroken intensive meditation. Dev Suroop says, ‘Truly transcend pain and suffering. Merge into the light and experience your soul, strength and peace.’
From the deeply contemplative compositions in her recordings,
Sahej and Narayan, to the hip, edgy beat of her chant-rap album
Kundalini Beat, Dev Suroop Kaur offers an extraordinary range of styles to invoke the experience of the Divine. She was blessed to study directly with Yogi Bhajan for most of her adult life and we are fortunate that she gratefully shares what she has learned – and continues to learn – about how to love, work and live better in the world.
Dev Suroop Kaur is a householder yogi who delights in sharing the practicality of nurturing a successful and deeply authentic life. She is an accomplished musician and recording artist who always ‘breaks it down and keeps it real,’ Shakta says, as she guides you to your own empowered Self.
She lives with her husband in Espanola, New Mexico. In addition to her teaching and musical activities, Dev Suroop gets to ‘walk her talk’ by maintaining a peaceful mind as a business executive in one of the for-profit businesses established by Yogi Bhajan. You won’t want to miss this chance to enjoy time with Dev Suroop Kaur when she visits KYL in September. Seating is limited. Advance registration suggested.
$20 in advance, $25 at the door.

*Shabd (sometimes spelled ‘shabad’) – The sound current; the Word of the Creator; refers to the teachings, writing and poems in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib (a compilation of the words of the Sikh Gurus as well as Hindu, Muslim and Sufi saints).
"Oneness of Heart"
is KYL's theme for September & October
During September and October at KYL come experience something we call the ‘Oneness of Heart.’ Yoga and meditation often brings you to a feeling of completeness, of wholeness and of truth. This is the connection to ‘all that is’ that yogis have been speaking about for millennia. It is that feeling of connectedness to something larger than our small ‘self’ that can provide a touchstone of peace during our busy day-to-day lives. We hope to see you often during the next few weeks to experience the larger sense of ‘Self’ available through ‘Oneness of Heart.’

Friday, September 17
6:30 pm to 7:45
with Shakta and Hari Dev
($15 in advance / $17 at door)
Join us for our popular monthly sessions of gong and mantra.
As always, we begin every ‘Healing Power of Gong & Mantra’ session with light Kundalini Yoga to prepare the body for what’s to come (the yoga is appropriate for all levels). Then we move into deep relaxation with not one, but
two beautiful Paiste symphonic gongs. Your mind will have no defense to the gong after 90 seconds!
After the gong we use sound (mantra) to remind us that the entire universe was built on sound, on vibration. And, as we vibrate a particular combination of sounds, we are able to tune into a different level of intelligence, or, consciousness.
Join us for the deep vibrational healing of triple gong and mantra on Friday

Free Aquarian Age Conference Call with Shakta
Special Topic: The Change-Maker Meditation
Saturday, September 18
8:30 am Central Time
• Are you ready for a change? If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to any of the above questions then join Shakta on a ‘free’ conference call to learn a powerful yogic tool that can clear unfinished patterns from your past and help you achieve a higher level of understanding about yourself and the world around you.
• Do you have some less-than-positive habits you would like to break?
• Is there some unfinished business—whether emotional, mental, physical or spiritual—that could use a gentle push towards completion?
The Kundalini Meditation that Shakta will share is one
that many practice together 40 days prior to the beginning of
KYL’s Teacher Training courses. This meditation uses the
syllables Sa Ta Na Ma...
Sa = Infinity, cosmos, beginning.
Sa, Ta, Na, Ma is, quite literally, the cycle of creation. From
the Infinite comes life and individual existence. From life
comes death or change. From death comes the rebirth of
consciousness to the joy of the infinite through which
compassion leads back to life.
Ta = Life, existence.
Na = Death.
Ma = Rebirth.
Shakta will also discuss details and answer questions regarding the
journey of personal transformation that is called ‘Kundalini
Yoga Teacher Training.’

The 100th Human
"The 100th Human" - A novel about 2012
by Chris Fenwick.
Just a few copies remain!
This is a book that you won’t want to put down – guaranteed!
One book $7.50, Two for $10.00 -
Buy one for a friend!
This is a lively summer read that is more conscious than most novels you’ll load onto your Kindle this season. The story is set in December of 2012, the final day of the 5000 year old Mayan calendar. The world is in turmoil as war and international tension continue. A small team of scientists uncover a riddle concerning the ‘End of Days.’ As they reveal the riddle’s symbolic meaning their journey brings them front and center in a war between good and evil; between spirituality and humanity’s often more materialistic focus. It is an adventure that becomes a race against time as they search for those who can assist in revealing the mystery of the ancient symbols... before time literally runs out!
Shakta read ‘The 100th Human’ several years ago and was pleased about the many references that parallel the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, including that everyone is connected to each other--that we are part of the same essence--like separate patterned squares on a large quilt. ‘The 100th Human’ also talks about personal destiny and how you can discover yourself to be a greater person than you ever dreamed yourself to be. (Who couldn’t use a little encouragement like that every once in awhile?!)
KYL’s supply of ‘The 100th
Human’ is limited, so, pick up your copy soon! (We will mail copies to you, too, if you can’t get to the studio soon.
Shipping fee is $5 for one book.)

What One Yogi Had To Say about ‘The 100th Human:’
"Wanted you to know that I gave one of the ‘100th Human’ books
away and the other I kept for myself. I read it and I absolutely
loved it. I loved it for the adventure and for the great
teachings that are in there. I loved it for the inspiration. I
told my students about it and hopefully they will order the book
for themselves, too! Thank you!
"In the mean time I would like to order 4 more books! I want to donate a couple of them to our local Library and the other two are for two birthday gifts... the birthdays are coming up soon, so thank you very much for your quick attention and for the gift of ‘The 100th Human!’"
October Teacher Training – Accelerate Your Spiritual Development
Chicago - KY Teacher Training at KYL
The Aquarian Teacher
October 2010 to May 2011
The Aquarian Teacher Training program is the KRI Level One Certification program in Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®. In this course you learn the fundamental principles and practices of Kundalini Yoga. You learn to develop the skills to master your own life. And, once you have completed all of the coursework, you will be certified to instruct others in Kundalini kriyas and meditations if you choose to do so.
Why is this course called the ‘Aquarian’ Teacher Training
program? Because, in the words of Yogi Bhajan, ‘The Age of
Aquarius is upon us where we feel it, know it, understand it, or
not. The past is going to be obsolete and teachers of the Age of
Aquarius are going to help humanity. How to grow, to glow. How
to serve, to be.“ But, before you can serve others you must...
The first student you have is yourself. Kundalini Yoga is the science of how to fulfill yourself in the experience of being human. Becoming conscious of your own consciousness is the first step. The second step is to serve others. Seeing the growth of a spiritual community around you and the miracle of lives transformed by this sacred science is most inspiring!
Kundalini Yoga is the technology of human consciousness. It is a sacred science that works on the chakras, the arcline and the aura. It works directly on energy. Either you are above the energy and ride it or you go below the energy and it rides you. This is where ‘self-leadership’ comes in. You learn to ride your own energy, to experience it, to remain neutral and act--rather than react-- in a given situation. It is a sacred science because through its study your own sacredness is awakened.
So, join us beginning with the last weekend in October
for ten weekends over eight months. Your self-mastery awaits. Click

You are Your Own Teacher
An Accident, Acceptance and Kirtan Kriya
by Sat Pavan Kaur Krulitz
Acceptance brings peace. I know this from personal experience. I'll start by telling you my story. I am an active, middle aged woman who had a rollerblading accident and landed on my head.
I don't remember the accident. I do remember waking up in the intensive care unit at the hospital. I didn't know where I was, why I was there or even how long I had been there. It turns out that I had what they called “moderate brain trauma”.
I went from being an intelligent, fit, person to one that couldn't watch TV because the flickering lights and images freaked out my brain, couldn't read a book because my eyes wouldn't track on the page and I couldn't remember what was happening in the story. Moving my body was slow and pretty limited. No balance.
I could have reacted in a number of ways. I could have gotten deeply depressed. After all I was a single mom who couldn't drive, get groceries, cook, do laundry, let alone oversee the kids and get them where they needed to go. My sons were 12 and 15 at the time. I could have been angry or frustrated.
Instead I chose to experience acceptance. This is what I can do right now, in this moment. What could I do?? I could meditate. I had signed up to start Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training at KYL in Chicago prior to the accident. We were given a meditation to do for the 40 days before the start of the course. The meditation is called Kirtan Kriya and uses the syllables Sa Ta Na Ma.
[To get a copy of this meditation,
It didn't matter if I couldn't sit up in a “traditional” meditation posture. Reclining on the couch worked just fine. I kept working with the idea, “what can I do right now?” I would try something and if I couldn't do it, I accepted it for that point in time. I meditated some times more frequently than once a day. I could do it. I did it a lot!
It turns out that Kirtan Kriya--the meditation that I was diligently practicing since I couldn't do much else except watch the fish and sleep--was exactly what my brain needed. Kirtan Kriya is designed to heal the frontal lobes**. My left frontal lobe was the part of my brain damaged by the accident. I’m no doctor, but, even I could see how different it looked from the rest of the brain when I saw the CAT scan when they took out the stitches and staples.
I told my brain to heal itself. I have an obedient brain and it did as it was told. I gave it the tools to do so--Kirtan Kriya. Little by little the things that I could do started outweighing what I couldn't do. I kept up with the meditation regardless. I started Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training 7 weeks after the accident. I realized that falling on my head taught me many of life's biggest lessons--including acceptance.
It doesn't matter how old or young you are. There are always things that you can and cannot do. The question is really do you accept where you are right now? Things change with each moment. Start observing each moment and don't be judgmental. Realize that this is the way it is right now. This is your chance to start practicing acceptance.
You may find some parts of a meditation or kriya* simple. You may have limitations that make some parts not physically doable. Visualize your body doing the meditation or posture even if you can't do it right now. Keep the breath moving as directed even if you need to take a break at some point. You will reap the benefits so long as that is your intention. Listen to your body. You are your own teacher.
*In Kundalini Yoga a ‘kriya’ is a sequence of postures, breath and sound that are integrated together to allow for manifestation of a particular state, for example, a clear mind or a healthy liver.
** Research into the efficacy of Kirtan Kriya can be found in the book "How God Changes Your Brain" by Dr. Andrew Newberg, MD.

Journey to India with KYL
Visit India – Change Your Life!
Join Shakta Kaur and Hari Dev Singh on this magnificent journey to India!
Feb. 14–28, 2011
extension to March 2)
"A yatra is a journey on earth to one's isht, one's higher self, one's altar, so destiny may not be altered and one can travel to the destiny. Walk on land with one's feet where all the great men's feet have already walked. It is a self-purification." - Yogi Bhajan
FOR ALL SPIRITUAL SEEKERS, TRAVEL TO INDIA HAS A SPECIAL APPEAL. The very land is steeped in spirituality, where many ancient practices were developed and perfected over 5,000 years ago. Simply walking the land can leave a profound and lasting imprint on your soul. To transform your life sometimes requires a journey which will change the way you view yourself and the world.
This is the third tour to India that Shakta and Hari Dev have led with the guidance of tour operator Deepak Singh of Spiritual Journeys.
While maintaining all the comforts of home you will have the profound experience of India;
absorbing the rich spiritual traditions while enjoying safe food, excellent lodging and the guidance of experienced staff.
Highlights of our tour include:
• Participating in the 5-day Punarnava conference “Ayurveda and Yoga: Where Science Meets Consciousness” held in Rishikesh (the yoga capital of the world);
• Visiting the sacred Golden Temple in Amritsar;
• Seeing the Taj Mahal in Agra on a beautiful sunrise tour;
• Washing away your karmas in the Mother River Ganges;
• Visiting Old and New Delhi;
• Walking the holy ground where Lord Buddha spoke his first sermon after 'awakening'
(optional extension tour to Sarnath/Varanasi).
The BBC has listed the Golden
Temple and Taj Mahal as two of the top ten sites to visit in the
world. The basic tour fee of $1,935 (until
January 15) includes
the conference, comfortable lodging, sacred ceremonies,
breakfast daily and English-speaking guides throughout the trip
(land only – airfare to and from India is approximately $1,300
additional). Besides visiting the great religious and cultural
sites, and walking in the footsteps of the Masters, our tour
also provides time to “shop with Shakta” in the bazaars (an
experience in and of itself!) and partake in local customs and
ceremonies. The optional extension tour is $400
additional. For more information
New Moon -
11 Days After - September 19
Full Moon - September 23
(Above Dates Adjusted for Central Time Zone)
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is
a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the
next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."
... is the time between the New Moon and the day before the Full
Moon. During this time the energy of the body moves into your higher
centers (chakras). This is the time to bring new things, new people
or new relationships into your life or to accelerate the progress
of your special projects.
11 Days After
Yogi Bhajan taught that this is the day when you are in balance.
The glandular system readjusts itself on this day. Your metabolism
is changing, so if you eat very lightly (green foods) or if you
live just on water and lemon today, your health will be perfect.
Eat very lightly during the day. Eat only one meal and drink lemon
and water the rest of the day.
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest
energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum,
so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your
energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this
day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink
cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought
to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down
so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it,
you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper,
a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous
causing side effect.)
- Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
($13) - not on Friday
(After Sunday's class join us for a vegetarian potluck.)
A Thought From Yogi Bhajan
Exercises, hard work and other physical activities do not serve the being as a whole. That is why the system of yoga was invented. It is only in yogic exercises that we time ourselves and work on the combination of our organs and our glands, which are the guardians of health, to bring us into balance. Kundalini Yoga is a balancing of the organs and the areas of the entire psyche of the human being to create oneness.
