Healing Power of Triple Gong & Mantra

Friday, August 20
6:30 pm to 7:45 pm

with Shakta, Hari Dev, and Sanjam
($15 in advance / $17 at door)

Join us for our popular monthly sessions of gong and mantra.  As always, we begin every ‘Healing Power of Gong & Mantra’ session with light Kundalini Yoga to prepare the body for what’s to come (the yoga is appropriate for all levels). Then we move into deep relaxation with not one, not two, but three beautiful Paiste symphonic gongs. Your mind will have no defense to the gong after 90 seconds!

After the gong we use sound (mantra) to remind us that the entire universe was built on sound, on vibration. And, as we vibrate a particular combination of sounds, we are able to tune into a different level of intelligence, or, consciousness.

Join us for the deep vibrational healing of triple gong and mantra on Friday - Click Here to register. The August ‘Bring a Friend Month’ discount is not applicable at this special event

Celebration of a Master

Yogi Bhajan’s Birthday

Thursday, August 26
Join us at KYL on Thursday morning, August 26, to honor the life and legacy of the Master of Kundalini Yoga, Yogi Bhajan. Yogi Bhajan brought the teachings of Kundalini Yoga and Meditation to the west in 1968. Before then, these teachings were considered a secret science taught only to the upper caste households in India. Yogi Bhajan’s fundamental belief was that happiness was the birthright of every person. He spent his entire life teaching people how they could live to their highest potential.

Once each year, on Yogi Bhajan’s birthday, the entire worldwide community of Kundalini Yogis gathers for a simultaneous synchronized chanting of two mantras. One of them, Long Ek Ong Kar, we chant for 2.5 hours. Los Angeles begins chanting Long Ek Ong Kar at 3:00 am, Chicago at 5:00 am, Boston at 6:00 am, etc., around the world.

Yogi Bhajan once said that whenever you chant Long Ek Ong Kar for 2.5 hours on his birthday that you would receive the answers to your prayers!

Our schedule for early morning on Thursday, Aug. 26:
4:15 am – Japji (meditative prayer)
4:40 am – Warm-Ups
4:49 am – Guru Guru Wahe Guru, Guru Ram Das Guru* chant for 11 minutes
5:00 am – Long Ek Ong Kar (Morning Call)** chant for 2.5 hours
7:30 am – Enjoy some breakfast snacks and delicious Yogi Tea!

Please arrive between 4:00 and 5:00 am. The doors to the Fine Arts Building (FAB) will be locked after 5:00 am. If you happen to arrive late and need entrance to the Fine Arts Building, please call the following cell phone number: 312-656-8229.

Shakta and Hari Dev will complete their 40-day sadhana of chanting 2.5 hours of Long Ek Ong Kar on Yogi Bhajan’s birthday as well. Come join them and be uplifted in the celebration of the life of a man who has changed the lives of tens of thousands of people all around the world! There is no charge for this event.

* Guru Ram Das was the 4th of the Sikh Gurus/Teachers and was known for his humility and compassion. This mantra can rescue you in the time of trouble. It projects the mind to Infinity then allows guidance to return into your finite, daily activities.

** The syllables are Ek Ong Kar Sat Nam Siri Wahe Guru. This was the only mantra meditation that Yogi Bhajan taught during his first year in the United States. The syllables mean, “The creator and all creation are one. This is our true identity. The ecstasy of this wisdom is Great beyond words.”

Sacred Chant Concert
Accessing Personal Peace through Sound & Mantra

with Dev Suroop Kaur

Monday - September 13 - 7 to 9 pm
Come join us in a celebration of the power of sound and mantra in an evening of chant and transformation with Dev Suroop Kaur. Dev Suroop promises an ‘instructional concert’ utilizing the technology of Yoga, spiritual wisdom, devotion, the intuitive knowledge of the Shabd*, chanting and unbroken intensive meditation. Dev Suroop says, ‘Truly transcend pain and suffering. Merge into the light and experience your soul, strength and peace.’

From the deeply contemplative compositions in her recordings, Sahej and Narayan, to the hip, edgy beat of her chant-rap album Kundalini Beat, Dev Suroop Kaur offers an extraordinary range of styles to invoke the experience of the Divine. She was blessed to study directly with Yogi Bhajan for most of her adult life and we are fortunate that she gratefully shares what she has learned – and continues to learn – about how to love, work and live better in the world.
Dev Suroop Kaur is a householder yogi who delights in sharing the practicality of nurturing a successful and deeply authentic life. She is an accomplished musician and recording artist who always ‘breaks it down and keeps it real,’ Shakta says, as she guides you to your own empowered Self.

She lives with her husband in Espanola, New Mexico. In addition to her teaching and musical activities, Dev Suroop gets to ‘walk her talk’ by maintaining a peaceful mind as a business executive in one of the for-profit businesses established by Yogi Bhajan. You won’t want to miss this chance to enjoy time with Dev Suroop Kaur when she visits KYL in September. Seating is limited. Advance registration suggested. $20 in advance, $25 at the door.  Click Here to register.

*Shabd (sometimes spelled ‘shabad’) – The sound current; the Word of the Creator; refers to the teachings, writing and poems in the Siri Guru Granth Sahib (a compilation of the words of the Sikh Gurus as well as Hindu, Muslim and Sufi saints).
FREE Breathwalk® Class

Sunday, August 29

1:00 – 2:30 pm

If you love walking and have always wanted to try Breathwalk®, then, this is an opportunity designed just for you! Plus, you’ll meet some of those preparing to become Breathwalk Instructors when you join them for a ‘complimentary’ Breathwalk on Sunday, August 29th at 1:00 pm.

Breathwalk® is a yogic walking practice that combines specific patterns of conscious breathing synchronized with your walking steps. While walking is the #1 form of exercise in America, we think you’ll find that Breathwalk is the 'next step' in feeling great as you condition not only the body but also the mind. We guarantee you’ll experience profound changes in just a few minutes of Breathwalking. Some have gone so far to say that these changes are even more profound than yoga and meditation!

Meet at 1:00 pm in the lobby of the Fine Arts Building, 410 S. Michigan Ave., on Sunday, August 29. Wear comfortable walking shoes (no flip flops, please!) and dress appropriately for the weather (sunscreen, hat, etc.). We’ll walk into Grant Park and Breathwalk® in the midst of the city’s late summer activity. Click Here to register (no charge for this class).
The 100th Human

"The 100th Human" - A novel about 2012
A novel about 2012 written by Chris Fenwick.
Wind down your summer with an affordable and quick read!

One book $7.50, Two for $10.00 - Buy one for a friend!
This is a lively summer read that is more conscious than most novels you’ll load onto your Kindle this season. The story is set in December of 2012, the final day of the 5000 year old Mayan calendar. The world is in turmoil as war and international tension continue. A small team of scientists uncover a riddle concerning the ‘End of Days.’ As they reveal the riddle’s symbolic meaning their journey brings them front and center in a war between good and evil; between spirituality and humanity’s often more materialistic focus. It is an adventure that becomes a race against time as they search for those who can assist in revealing the mystery of the ancient symbols...  before time literally runs out!

Shakta read ‘The 100th Human’ several years ago and was pleased about the many references that parallel the teachings of Yogi Bhajan, including that everyone is connected to each other--that we are part of the same essence--like separate patterned squares on a large quilt. ‘The 100th Human’ also talks about personal destiny and how you can discover yourself to be a greater person than you ever dreamed yourself to be. (Who couldn’t use a little encouragement like that every once in awhile?!)

KYL’s supply of ‘The 100th Human’ is limited, so, pick up your copy soon! (We will mail copies to you, too, if you can’t get to the studio soon. Shipping fee is $5 for one book.)  Click Here to request this book.
What One Yogi Had To Say about ‘The 100th Human:’

"Wanted you to know that I gave one of the ‘100th Human’ books away and the other I kept for myself. I read it and I absolutely loved it. I loved it for the adventure and for the great teachings that are in there. I loved it for the inspiration. I told my students about it and hopefully they will order the book for themselves, too! Thank you!

"In the mean time I would like to order 4 more books! I want to donate a couple of them to our local Library and the other two are for two birthday gifts... the birthdays are coming up soon, so thank you very much for your quick attention and for the gift of ‘The 100th Human!’"
October Teacher Training – Accelerate Your Spiritual Development
Chicago - KY Teacher Training at KYL

The Aquarian Teacher

October 2010 to May 2011
The Aquarian Teacher Training program is the KRI Level One Certification program in Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®. In this course you learn the fundamental principles and practices of Kundalini Yoga. You learn to develop the skills to master your own life. And, once you have completed all of the coursework, you will be certified to instruct others in Kundalini kriyas and meditations if you choose to do so.

AQUARIAN Why is this course called the ‘Aquarian’ Teacher Training program? Because, in the words of Yogi Bhajan, ‘The Age of Aquarius is upon us where we feel it, know it, understand it, or not. The past is going to be obsolete and teachers of the Age of Aquarius are going to help humanity. How to grow, to glow. How to serve, to be.“ But, before you can serve others you must...

FULFILL YOURSELF The first student you have is yourself. Kundalini Yoga is the science of how to fulfill yourself in the experience of being human. Becoming conscious of your own consciousness is the first step. The second step is to serve others. Seeing the growth of a spiritual community around you and the miracle of lives transformed by this sacred science is most inspiring!

SACRED SCIENCE Kundalini Yoga is the technology of human consciousness. It is a sacred science that works on the chakras, the arcline and the aura. It works directly on energy. Either you are above the energy and ride it or you go below the energy and it rides you. This is where ‘self-leadership’ comes in. You learn to ride your own energy, to experience it, to remain neutral and act--rather than react-- in a given situation. It is a sacred science because through its study your own sacredness is awakened.

So, join us beginning with the last weekend in October for ten weekends over eight months. Your self-mastery awaits. Click these links for the online brochure or registration form.

Devi Scholarship - KYL also has a partial scholarship program available for those in need of financial assistance.  The deadline for consideration for a Devi Scholarship is Wednesday, September 1st Click Here for application.
Devi Scholarships Available for Chicago Level 1 Teacher Training
  Financial Assistance
is Available
If finances have kept you from taking Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training at KYL in the past, then the Devi Scholarship is designed just for you! Go on-line to complete the application form and return it with your $500 deposit on or before September 1st to be considered for one of several partial Devi Scholarships - funded by friends and other supporters as well as prior graduates of KYL’s Teacher Training courses.
What one Devi Scholarship recipient has to say...

In an open letter to KYL alumni who have contributed so generously to the Devi Scholarship Fund, one scholarship recipient wrote, in part,

“I’d thought of writing a thank you immediately upon receiving this scholarship, but decided instead to offer up a prayer of gratitude and wait until I could share what the experience meant to me. I am awed by the breadth of yoga, by the true reach of consciousness, and the possibilities of yoking yoga with daily living. Thank you for believing so much in this yoga and that those called to this path, regardless of financial circumstance, must heed the call. In providing the finances to facilitate an answer to Spirit, you do an incredible service to the world. You create teachers. You birth a greater mindfulness. You go above and beyond to gracefully usher in the footsteps of the Aquarian Age. I thank you most heartily for this. I know that many opportunities will come for me to give as you have; I trust that I shall show as much generosity and so continue this Golden Chain of offering, of connection, of evolution and of service. Thank you.”

Journey to India with KYL
Visit India – Change Your Life!

Join Shakta Kaur and Hari Dev Singh on this magnificent journey to India!

Feb. 14–28, 2011
(optional extension to March 2)
"A yatra is a journey on earth to one's isht, one's higher self, one's altar, so destiny may not be altered and one can travel to the destiny. Walk on land with one's feet where all the great men's feet have already walked. It is a self-purification." - Yogi Bhajan
FOR ALL SPIRITUAL SEEKERS, TRAVEL TO INDIA HAS A SPECIAL APPEAL. The very land is steeped in spirituality, where many ancient practices were developed and perfected over 5,000 years ago. Simply walking the land can leave a profound and lasting imprint on your soul. To transform your life sometimes requires a journey which will change the way you view yourself and the world.

This is the third tour to India that Shakta and Hari Dev have led with the guidance of tour operator Deepak Singh of Spiritual Journeys. While maintaining all the comforts of home you will have the profound experience of India; absorbing the rich spiritual traditions while enjoying safe food, excellent lodging and the guidance of experienced staff.

Highlights of our tour include:
• Participating in the 5-day Punarnava conference “Ayurveda and Yoga: Where Science Meets Consciousness” held in Rishikesh (the yoga capital of the world);
• Visiting the sacred Golden Temple in Amritsar;
• Seeing the Taj Mahal in Agra on a beautiful sunrise tour;
• Washing away your karmas in the Mother River Ganges;
• Visiting Old and New Delhi;
• Walking the holy ground where Lord Buddha spoke his first sermon after 'awakening' (optional extension tour to Sarnath/Varanasi).

The BBC has listed the Golden Temple and Taj Mahal as two of the top ten sites to visit in the world. The basic tour fee of $1,935 (until January 15) includes the conference, comfortable lodging, sacred ceremonies, breakfast daily and English-speaking guides throughout the trip (land only – airfare to and from India is approximately $1,300 additional). Besides visiting the great religious and cultural sites, and walking in the footsteps of the Masters, our tour also provides time to “shop with Shakta” in the bazaars (an experience in and of itself!) and partake in local customs and ceremonies.  The optional extension tour is $400 additional.  For more information click here.

Moon Watch

New Moon - August 9

11 Days After - August 20

Full Moon - August 24

(Above Dates Adjusted for Central Time Zone)
New Moon
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."

Waxing Moon
... is the time between the New Moon and the day before the Full Moon. During this time the energy of the body moves into your higher centers (chakras). This is the time to bring new things, new people or new relationships into your life or to accelerate the progress of your special projects.

11 Days After New Moon
Yogi Bhajan taught that this is the day when you are in balance. The glandular system readjusts itself on this day. Your metabolism is changing, so if you eat very lightly (green foods) or if you live just on water and lemon today, your health will be perfect. Eat very lightly during the day. Eat only one meal and drink lemon and water the rest of the day.

Full Moon
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum, so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it, you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous causing side effect.)

A Thought From Yogi Bhajan
Consciousness is your best friend, and soul is your only strength. Don’t flash your wealth, your flesh, your money, your power, your youth. If you project anything other than soul, you are projecting trouble.
