Come to KYL early Tuesday morning to celebrate the birthday of the Sikh saint and warrior, Guru Gobind Singh. Guru Gobind Singh was born in 1666 as Gobind Rai. He exhibited great fearlessness and an elevated consciousness at a very young age. When he was just 9 years old he advised his father to face martyrdom. As Guru he trained peasant farmers in India to become a formidable army to defend others' religious freedom.

Jaap Sahib is a prayer written by Guru Gobind Singh when he was 19 years old. It describes all of the aspects of the Creator. The yoga set Tuesday morning is the practice of bowing rhythmically to the verses of Jaap Sahib (i.e., ‘Bowing Jaap Sahib’). The sound of Jaap Sahib rouses the soul and the higher self of the human being. It is good to recite--or even to simply listen to--when your position is endangered or when you feel weak. It brings grace, greatness and royal courage.

There is no charge for this special early morning sadhana. Please arrive between 4:15 and 5:00 am (the doors will be locked after 5 am).

Join us for a fun, inspiring and conscious evening of Kundalini Yoga, meditation, drumming, chanting and community at KYL’s 7th Annual ‘Yogic New Year’s Eve’ celebration! This year we will enjoy the newly renovated floor in the historic ballroom on the 10th floor of the Fine Arts Building (FAB) which provides a perfect view of Lake Michigan and the fireworks from Navy Pier. Delicious organic, vegetarian food will be served in an alcohol and tobacco free environment.

This New Year’s Eve we have both a Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse as major influencers. This may manifest for you as a feeling of wanting to plan as little as possible for the holidays. If that is the case, keep your celebrations simple and inexpensive. Put your focus inward instead, towards your personal growth, in the company of like-minded people as you consider joining us Dec. 31st for ‘Yogic New Year’s Eve.’

An Experience of Pure Consciousness

 Journal Entry December 15, 2009:

"Sat Nam and Wahe Guru! What an incredible weekend experience with this year’s teachers in training at KYL. Shakta taught the Mind and Meditation weekend and filled it with a sampling of many different Kundalini meditation practices. Even as an assistant I was affected profoundly by the weekend and in particular by one experience that I will share.

The "kriya for early morning sadhana" was straight out of the Level 1 manual. I later learned that it was a kriya for lungs, magnetic field and deep meditation (pp. 366-367). I could feel my arms, shoulders, and spine opening up and the energy moving... but the greatest effect came at the end during deep relaxation.

I began to 'see' a rather large oval shaped orb pulsing with blue and white light. It filled most of my chest cavity. It looked like atomic energy moving around inside of me. I then recognized that others in the room had the same orb of bluish white light floating in their heart centers, as well. The next thing I knew, all of us in the room were enclosed in one large lattice of bluish-white beams of pulsing energy. It looked almost like a geodesic dome encompassing us all. It was so peaceful. It was so natural.

I now realize that I was seeing our group energy (or consciousness); how we were all connected, covered and protected by that energy field. It was beautiful and profound. I feel blessed that I was given the gift of witnessing this flow of energy made visible through my practice of Kundalini Yoga. Thank you, Shakta and thank you, Yogiji. New Year’s Eve 2009 brings us a Full Moon with a Lunar Eclipse!  On the last day of 2009 we enjoy a Full Moon and the last of four lunar eclipses of the year.

We hope you will join us on this night for our Yogic New Year’s Eve as our community celebrates all that the heavens provide! This final lunar eclipse of 2009 is in the water sign of Cancer—which can be quite emotional and very compassionate. Don’t be surprised if your sensitivity factor is ramped-up on and around Dec. 31st.

Lunar eclipses behave like an extra-intense full Moon--an emotional high tide where you can assess where you are emotionally. In the days immediately after this Full Moon and before the next New Moon it will be helpful to put a plan together to either maximize what is great in your life or to make the kinds of changes that will make you feel more comfortable.

In this unique six-day course called ‘Authentic Relationships’ you will learn how to consistently connect with the true identity of yourself and others. You will gain the skills to prevent judgments, fears or circumstances from obstructing your view of the true identity of everyone in your life - as ‘Sat Nam.’  Penetrating through illusions and always relating to the true Essence—the Oneness of all—in your relationships is the ultimate goal.

Come explore how to:
  • Create and maintain Soul-based relationships;
  • Honor the polarities of the male and female energies;
  • Recognize and create Authentic Relationships in each area of your life; and
  • Cultivate personal practices that develop your capacity for Authentic Relationships.

Each day you will study with the Master--Yogi Bhajan--in a video class and meditation. In addition, you will work individually and in groups, exploring the key concepts and ideas in Authentic Relationships. You will experience kriyas* and meditations as well as other processes to recognize how your personal life is affected both by Authentic Relationships and by relationships with a false core.

This is a 60+ hour course; one of five Level 2 modules. Fifty hours are spent in the classroom with 12 hours of home-study to be completed 90 days after the course concludes.

Lead Trainer KRI Director of Training Gurucharan Singh Khalsa, Ph.D.  We are graced with the return of Gurucharan Singh to Chicago for ‘Authentic Relationships.’ Gurucharan is an expert in Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan®, and has been the interpreter and compiler of his teachings since 1969. He serves as the International Director of Teacher Training for the Kundalini Research Institute (KRI), which he co-founded in 1972.
Level 2 Trainer GuruMeher Singh Khalsa serves as the Director of Training at Yogi Bhajan’s original yoga studio, Yoga West, in Los Angeles. GuruMeher has over 25 years experience teaching Kundalini Yoga and Meditation. He is a respected life coach who helps others via yoga, meditation and personal mentoring to accelerate growth, remove obstacles and increase their happiness.

*In Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan® a kriya is a sequence of postures, breath and sound that are integrated together to manifest a particular state. When you practice a Kundalini Yoga kriya the result of its repetition is access to a particular, predictable and stable state—one facet of your awareness.

Full Moon
You are naturally accelerated on a full moon. You are at your highest energy level. The secretions in your body will be at their maximum, so you don't want your energy being used to consume food. Save your energy to reconstruct yourself. Try to drink only liquids on this day. If you feel you must eat, drink only milk. (But, don't drink cold milk right out of the refrigerator. Milk should be brought to a boil. Allow the milk to foam up and then bring the heat down so the milk is on a slow boil for 5-10 minutes. While cooking it, you may add a pinch of ground turmeric, a pinch of black pepper, a cinnamon stick, or a few pinches of ginger to reduce any mucous causing side effect.)

Waning Moon
... is the time between the Full Moon and the day before the New Moon. This is the best time to remove things, relationships or situations from your life that no longer serve you. It is not generally thought of as the best time to start a new project.

New Moon
The New Moon is when you are at your lowest...energy-wise. It is a good day to fast on lemon and water. Fast from sun-up until the next morning at breakfast, when you "break" the "fast."
