For Epilepsy

(Meditation as Medicine, p. 253, Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa)

Posture: Sit on your heel, right leg over the left, left leg touching the floor. This is called Hero Pose. You can also sit in a chair with your right leg crossed over your left and your back straight.

Focus: Your eyes are one-tenth open and look at the palms of your hands.

Breath: The breath will come automatically as you chant.

Mantra: Chant continuously the mantra, “Sa, Ta, Na, Ma.”

Meaning of Mantra: This mantra represents the cycle of creation. “Sa” means infinity; “Ta” means life; “Na” means death; “Ma” means rebirth.

Mudra: The hands are cupped, little fingers touching along their length, ini front of your chest, as if you were about to receive an offering.

Time: Start with 3 or 11 minutes and slowly build up to 31 minutes.

End: Inhale, hold your breath for 10 seconds, exhale and relax.

COMMENTS: This meditation is helpful in cases of epilepsy. Of course, however, no patient should stop taking any anti-seizure medication abruptly or without the knowledge of his/her physician.
